"Americans are spending less time reading. Reading comprehension skills are eroding. These declines have serious civic, social, cultural, and economic implications"
Print Motivation - Being interested in and enjoying books. Print Awareness - Noticing print everywhere, knowing how to handle a book and knowing how to follow the written word on the page. Letter Knowledge, vocabulary, phonological awareness, narrative skills.
One thing I notice at work, since I work with kids, is that I have 8 years old who still don't know how to put letters the right way, such as backwards letters. They do however know how to use an iPhone completely, and know every part of Minecraft there is to know. This is becoming a problem that has gotten worse and worse every year i have worked there
I know my sister who is 9 has the same problem Robert. Hers is due to dyslexia which mine is as well. I still write my b and d backwards when I print but, reading and the fact that I started reading for pleasure has made a huge difference on my dyslexia and my sister is improving as well. I can read faster now that I am not reading sentences backward, though my print still suffers. I don't think that it will ever change as hard as I have tried.
"For the first time in modern history, less than half of the adult population now reads literature, and these trends reflect a larger decline in other sorts of reading."
