    Good pedagogy prescribes that effective programs "meet students where they are." For middle-school students, this means meeting them in adolescence. Adolescents are more concerned with social norms and more susceptible to peer influence than younger children. Additionally, the fact that these youth are still struggling after years of reading instruction suggests that their motivation to persist at reading is likely to have suffered. To fully support and engage such adolescents, reading programs must leverage social processes and include explicit support for motivation and strategy use.

    Diigo's default comment: LearnZillion is the world's first open, cloud-based curriculum. We help teachers, schools, and districts improve instruction and respond to the specific needs of their students. My comments: Learn zillion provides a large bank of instructional videos and resources that align to the Common Core. The lessons are designed for teachers or students. I often show bits and pieces of certain videos to my students during our ELA or Math block. Occasionally I will just use a Learnzillion video for myself as a refresher on strategies for teaching a specific standard. This resource can help identify and eliminate instructional gaps in the classroom. Teachers can even log in and assign their students specific videos or just share a link.

    iTunes University is a learning platform for all ages and subjects to utilize. The course manager allows anyone to build and publish their own iTunesU courses. For example, teachers who recognize a learning gap within the intended standards can create a unit plan on iTunes U. Since they become the author of this instructional resource, students can really benefit as learners. iTunes University can also serve as a professional development resource.     The study compares students (grade 4) that received traditional instruction to those who received computer assisted instruction (CAI) with traditional instruction for basic math facts. The results show that daily CAI positively effects student math achievement. This study is interesting in that students received 10 minutes of CAI to achieve these results.

    The study described in this article is very interesting because it relates to our group's Exploratory Question. We are trying to see if computer practice one or twice a week correlates to progress in students' mastering their addition and subtraction facts. As shown in the article, computer assisted instruction had a positive impact on the students' fluency of basic math facts.

    The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of computer-based math interventions in an attempt to improve math performance of fourth and fifth grade students with math struggles; most notably memory, retention deficits and poor recall. As mathematics is cumulatively based, it is imperative that students master one concept before moving onto the next. Noted math deficits are typically evident by middle school corresponding to the introduction of algebraic concepts. This study found that the foundation of skills can be attained with computer-based math interventions that directly targets deficit areas with routine, strategically designed practices designed specifically to improve retention and retrieval of math foundations.
