This article, by the Access Center, discusses how to implement differentiation effectively in the classroom. The method put forward states that one must access student readiness, determine student interest and identify learning styles to successfully differentiation. Multiple strategies are also presented for implementation in a math classroom setting.

This short article discusses strategies for helping adolescents who are reading at low levels.

This article provides information on helping older students who struggle with reading and Word study for adolescents who read at a very low level. It also provides next steps for these students. Even though it is geared toward older students, the strategies can be applied to younger ones as well. My Smart goal, 80% of students will reach level K in reading (lowest grade-appropriate reading level for second grade) by the beginning of the December, can be aided by this strategy. Word Study support can aid in decoding skills, which in turn helps students to become better readers. And once students can decode successfully, they can really focus in on the comprehension skills.

This resource provides a list of 10 strategies to support English Language Learners (ELLs) in math. The best practices which stood out most to me are eliciting nonverbal responses when students need to demonstrate understanding, such as a simple thumbs up or thumbs down. This allows students to answer questions without having to produce the language. In addition, this resource supports my SMART target learning goal to support students with explaining how to solve for an unknown in an equation. The resource suggests using sentence frames so students can better participate in discussions, which also provides structure as students explain their mathematical thinking.

This article shows the success a group of schools have in teaching instruction when there is a purposeful, intimate focus on individual teachers. When teachers are given proper tools, instruction, and guidance, they will succeed in instructing students and therefore a greater percentage of students will have a better understanding of what is being taught.

This resources provides teachers with strategies to support English Language Learners with participating in meaningful math discussions. This supports my SMART goal to help students explain how to solve for the unknown in an equation. This resources is really great because it gives the teacher tips on how to facilitate discussion and a breakdown of roles for teachers and students.

Eureka Math is the math program that is currently being used at my school. Lesson one is allowing students to compare lengths using taller than and shorter than. In the first problem set, students are asked to identify the longer stick in each pair and draw an object taller than the objects pictured. This lesson plan is used for my SMART goal because students are able to identify and draw pictures about which object is taller than or shorter than.

Exit slips for kindergarten is a great way to test the knowledge of students on the current lesson for the day. It serves as a quiz and comprehension check. This website can be useful for a SMART learning goal because students will be using classroom manipulatives to show their knowledge on measuring various items.

SMART Goal: Given 1 month of guided reading instruction, students in below grade-level reading groups will increase their reading level by at least one level. This article explains how implementing consistent guided reading in the classroom can improve reading levels. This directly relates to my SMART Goal because it gives suggestions on how to organize and implement the difficult task of guided reading groups.

This is a blog post with tips for teaching both advanced and struggling students in the same classroom. This could provide some ideas for our goal of improving AP Bio scores for a sub-group of students in the class.

This site contains free resources for science teachers. Teachers can search to find resources by keyword, such as topic or class. Our group can use this to find lesson plans or activities to support our SMART goal of supplementing instruction for some AP Biology students.

By the end of the quarter, 80% of students will obtain a 60% or higher in Algebra 1 By the of Unit 5, 80% of students will score at least 70% on the end of unit assessment In this activity, students take a gallery walk to view the multiple ways of solving a math problem and representing their math thinking. This type of activity allows for students to display their work in a non-threatening way. The students will be checking their understanding and learning other solutions for a given math problem. This activity could also meet the Math and Social Studies goals of my group because gallery walks can foster discussions where students explain their thinking and teach each other in the process.

This article details an instructional model called Interactive Learning (IL), which contains ten best practices for educators to follow that must be implemented in all lessons. Using these practices can help student achievement tremendously, as evidenced by the example school, which doubled student achievement in three years using these practices.

This is a informative article about 10 strategies for engaging underperforming students. Since my SMART goal is all about giving additional resources for success to my lowest performing students (students who previously took Biology I) this fits perfectly. This will help me create a plan to reach out and engage each student and write up resources for each of them.

I think these ideas have come a long way and are being implemented in many classrooms. This seems like a norm for my school or even my classroom. Although, I say that and I think it is hard to incorporate all components every day. Especially when I think of student movement. A doctoral dissertation about enhancing writing at the elementary level. Teachers used an intensive 9 week writing program and observed the effects on the students' writing performance. Learning gaps with writing is very wide and instructional changes are made in order to help students write better. Cross-curricular instruction with writing is also emphasized in this study.
