    This source is a list of research-based strategies you can use to teach beginning phonics and phonemic awareness skills to struggling readers. It is meant to used as intervention methods.  Some of these suggested activities would be good for use in whole group scenarios but many of the activities would be better for us in working with small groups of students. Most of the suggested activities are multi-sensory and interactive.

Starfall ABCs - 1 views

    Within the website "Starfall" for beginning level readers there is an entire letter practice session; it is in the form of an interactive game. All of the letters of the alphabet are presented and students are able to click on one. It then takes the student through an interactive presentation (visuals and sounds) of that letter: it shows the upper and lowercase form of the letter, makes the letter sound, shows and says words that begin with that letter and dictates a sentence to students using many words beginning with the chosen letter. This would be good for students who are struggling to identify the letters of the alphabet and their sounds; good for repetitive, independent practice as students could use this by themselves on a computer.

Science Achievement for All: Improving Science Performance and Closing Achievement Gaps - 1 views

    This article presents a Texas district's plan on closing the science instructional gap in ethnically diverse students in 2 low socioeconomic elementary schools. Teachers set up a multisensory interactive word walls to teach vocabulary, and designed inquiry science lessons that were aligned with standards and the Texas school district's curriculum framework and pacing guides for science instruction. Purposeful planning gave teachers a chance to become familiar with the progression of instructional goals, and provided time to create activities that fit within the framework and that addressed essential vocabulary. The inquiry science lessons incorporated 5-E: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaboate, and Evaluate, where Engagement is meant to activate prior knowledge, Exploration is hands on inquiry, Explanation involves teacher-guided questions, Elaboration gives students the chance to "solidify" understandin, and Evaluation involves formative and summative assessments. Vocabulary development was achieved with the use of word walls and visuals, sometimes provided by the student to develop familiarity and fluency. Studies showed significant improvement in student achievement. Students reported recognizing science concepts in everyday life, a good sign of true learning. It even benefited the teachers, who reported having "refined" and strengthened science knowledge and teaching strategies as a result of professional development. A balance of focused district standards and teacher-designed interactive lessons using effective research based strategies, seems to have a powerful effect on closing learning and instructional gaps.

    Note: The article is in English, although the page that shows the full article is written in Spanish. This article presents the idea that using screencasts and/or video lessons can help give students access to better instruction. The main idea of the paper is that to properly support students, one needs to be able to help answer questions in a timely fashion. As students study away from school, they tend to email questions to their instructors. I have noticed in recent years that emailed questions, although extremely relevant, can be unwieldy to explain via text. The article's text has the exact same conclusion (which is why it resonated with me the way it did) and makes the distinction that those same unwieldy or impractical 'text' solutions would be trivially answered if the student was face-to-face with the instructor. This concept, that face-to-face interaction is superior to all others, is the motivation for writing this paper. While screencasts and videos are not very interactive (for the most part), they are superior to simple written explanations (especially for complex or visual problems in science and math).

    I enjoyed reading this article discuss how technology can be used to close achievement gaps, and improve learning in the classroom. I liked how the article listed recommendations for educators to use technology for risk high school youth. I think middle and elementary school educators can also find this article helpful with the mention of blended learning, which I use in my classroom as an elementary school classroom teacher.

    This article highlights a report completed by the Alliance for Excellent Education and the Staford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education in 2014. The article notes that students can make significant increases in learning and engagement through the use of technology. However, students from poor socio economic backgrounds may not have the same instruction or access to technology as those from more affluent neighborhoods. The auther then presents a list of solutions.

    I like that this article encourages a blended learning approach with technology. I think that tech is a powerful tool that needs to be paired with hands on activities for the early learners.

The students who used the "Explore 9-11" app reported greater emotional engagement with the historical actors, leading one student to describe the app as depicting "people with real experiences."     This article hits the nail on the head! At my school we are redesigning our language program to a more student-centered, hands-on instructional approach. I think it is very important to change up the old ways of teaching and find new ways that really engage students. This year, I took out all the desks in my room. Taking down that physical barrier has helped to improve student engagement. We sit or stand in a circle and students are much more motivated! Including games and activities that connect to students' interest is also important.

    This is a great article focusing on engagement in the classroom! It discusses the necessity of hands on learning to maintain students interest. This is important for students of all academic levels. Hands on learning not only engages students because they are "doing", they also are developing critical thinking skills. As a special education teacher, I know that in order to assist my students in learning, I need to keep their attention and provide them with interesting, hands on learning.

    I love this article! I have always been a strong believer in hands on learning and I love that they call it an engagement gap! Students get bored when a teacher gets up and lectures them all day. They need to be engaged! The activities need to be purposeful and have a specific meaning but a teacher can make just about any topic engaging just by getting the kids moving and interacting. I 100% agree that students retain information longer when they are engaged and enjoying what they are learning.

    This is a site that can put interactive links into a online photograph. I am going to have students create their own Thinglink when we begin reading "A House on Mango Street." This will serve as a mini research project. If that goes well, I will probably also use this tool with my theatre classes when the Tony nominations are announced- the students will make a Thinglink that captures the history of the awards and the current nominees. The students will be able to imbed video clips for many of the shows.

    This a great tool where you can post questions or comments on a wall that is interactive. We used it during a school wide staff meeting and it worked really well. It served as a "parking lot" for questions so it didn't disrupt the flow of the meeting. We also had other teachers and administrators responding to the questions/comments in real time. See the description below.. Brainstorm with students from your own school or from other schools. This program allows you to post stickers with your ideas onto a virtual wall. You can embed your wall on a website or blog.

    Brandon, This is a great tool. I have been in staff meeting where it has taken much longer than it should have, but this allows for questions to be answered while information is being presented.
