Week 7: We are always looking for new strategies for teaching fitness to our middle school students (the article focuses on students aged 13-19). Focuses not just on their physical ability but also their cognitive abilities. When we discussed this reading we all agreed when the article said " Be aware that many teenagers have a short attention span. Create variety to keep them excited and engaged. Circuits, boot camps, strength training and partner yoga are great choices for teens." We recently did a circuit workout that included all of those things. (Stevenson, 2013)

My Smart goal is 80% of students will reach level K in reading (lowest grade-appropriate reading level for second grade) by the beginning of the December. Even though this strategy was used in writing, I believe it could be used for reading as well. The students in my class have reading partners they work with very closely. They could read and show how they are using comprehension strategies and their partner could use the protocol praise, question, and suggestion. Using the planning protocol rubric, it is clear this strategy would be highly effective in the classroom and could be aligned to the content standards. There isn't a high technology element, but it could be adjusted to include a technology portion.

Ericka Posey smart goal: By the end of April, 80% of the 10th grade LSN Government students will be able to analyze political cartoons and write accurate BCRs with 75% accuracy for historical content and meaning. The planning protocol rubric has 7 dimensions if I had to devise which of these dimensions it would be rigor or relevance or student engagement both with a level of 3. I believe that if students peer read each other's written papers they can gain insight on what is incorrect with their peers papers and how they can improve their own writing. Student can find two point to praise on their partner's paper, two question to bring forth inquiry and analysis, 2 suggestions for their partners written works in which the students are building critical thinking and analysis skills to help them analyze political cartoons and writing BCRs.

A study in using technology (among other things) to improve middle school math performance.

This is a collection of instructional strategies that can be used to improve student writing and cooperation and encourage critical thinking. Links to strategies are sorted by teachers' needs: Monitor Progress, Compare and Contrast Ideas, Form Groups, Get Moving!, Work Together, Adapt Content, Share Ideas & Opinions, and Take Notes. Within these categories are several links to various strategies to meet these needs. Each of the links leads to a clear description of how the strategy can be used and multiple examples and clickable resources that can be utilized by teachers immediately. This site has a plethora of interesting activities and tasks for students to encourage better collaboration and thinking. An instructional gap our team recognized that is quite prolific among middle school-aged students is the lack of elaboration or explanation of details in their expository writing pieces. Students can organized paragraphs and essays write clear topic sentences and conclusions, but they struggle supporting their claims with specific details and then explaining how their details relate to the topic.

This document provides a detailed overview of the writing process for teachers of and students in secondary schools (grades 7-12). It provides numerous strategies teachers in all content areas can employ to encourage students to write more frequency and with more fluency. The document is organized in chronological order according to the steps of the writing process (Generating Ideas, Developing and Organizing Ideas, and Revising and Editing). Each of these steps in the writing process is described and accompanied by detailed activities. The explicit guidelines (instructions) for each activity could be easily utilized by a novice teacher, but even a seasoned master teacher can benefit from exploring the strategies posed in this document. To address our identified learning gap (that secondary students struggle to elaborate on initial ideas in their writing), the section on "Adding Content" on p. 104 of this document is especially helpful.

This is a scholarly article on the students perceptions of the climate in the gym and how it enhances their goals in physical education. It is interesting because there are times that we all have bad days, but we can't let that effect the climate of the gym if we want our students to be and feel successful!

This artifact is an AVID student handout that explains the Cornell Note Taking Summary Template. It describes step by step how to write a complete summary of your Cornell Notes. Being able to complete a summary will help the students reflect on the information they just acquired and make the connections necessary for understanding the material.

This artifact is an AVID student handout with Costa's 3 Levels of Thinking. It includes key words to use in your questions to help guide you to create different levels of questions ranging from basic remembering and understanding to creating and evaluating. Students will use this handout to develop the questions they create for their class Cornell Notes, Essential Questions and Cornell Notes they write for their homework reading assignments.

Chapter 6 of this book by Pérsida Himmele and William Himmele focuses on Total Participation Techniques that move. Of particular interest to my data team is the section of this chapter on Bounce Cards. This strategy can help all students feel confident and comfortable participating in a group discussion. I think it can be especially helpful to world language teachers looking to encourage students to discuss academic topics in the target language. (Week 9)

Hundreds of games and activities for a variety of subjects (including math, science, language arts) and all grade levels. Many activities include quizzes to check for comprehension.

Slideshows teaching these skills with built in activities for students. Slideshows are in English, but students will need to understand the skill first before they can transfer it to the target language. Teachers can provide French examples to supplement the slideshows.

This article by Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey gives suggestions for meaningful vocabulary instruction. In order for this to occur students need to have opportunities to interact with the words, to make personal connections to the vocabulary and to consolidate their knowledge. Because all teachers, no matter their content area, have to teach vocabulary this article has value for all teachers looking to improve the way they approach vocabulary instruction. (Week 8)

Week 7

This is a great site for teachers that has free feature and a cheap pay feature. The free feature will still give educators access to worksheets, but with the paid for version you can edit the worksheets to fit more of your classroom style. This helps tie real world problems into the math classroom, helping with the age old question "When will I ever use this." Hopefully this connection will help students not only enjoy math but remember it more too.
