Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood is the grandfather of Islamist groups in the Middle East. Since the organisation was set up in Ismailia in 1928, its influence has spread across the region and the Arab uprisings of 2011 have provided it with unprecedented political opportunities.

Egyptians will choose between between the Muslim Brotherhood and a candidate from the Mubarak-era regime when the presidential election goes to a run-off, state media confirm. The Brotherhood candidate, Mohammed Mursi, has a slight lead on former PM Ahmed Shafiq, with a reported 25.3% of votes against 24.9%.

Tensions have been rising between some of the main candidates in Egypt's presidential elections as polls near a close on the second day of voting. Amr Moussa and Ahmed Shafiq have traded accusations, saying false rumours are being spread that each is about to withdraw from the hotly contested race.

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is expected to suspend his campaign next week, US media reports. The former House Speaker said on Wednesday that he expected Mitt Romney, who won five primaries on Tuesday, to be the Republican nominee. The Gingrich campaign had said it would reassess its future if he did not win the contest in Delaware.

The letters recently sent out by the Santorum campaign that ripped into Mitt Romney were ordered before the he suspended his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, his campaign manager said.
