Bloom's Broken Down - 1 views

This wiki is created by Andrew Church. He has really aligned many technologies with Bloom's hierarchy. It's a very valuable site for justifying how technology can support thinking/learning goals, in my opinion. :)

Educational Networking: The important role Web 2.0 will play in education - 5 views

Can Social Networking Keep Students In School? : NPR - 3 views

  • Can Social Networking Keep Students In School?
  • But schools are now trying to keep students coming back with a new twist on a familiar tool — social networking.
  • A School-Based Facebook

  • The foundation is announcing Wednesday that it will invest $2 million in Inigral — a company that is trying to build virtual college communities by creating school-based Facebook sites.
  • Only students can gain entry to these sites, and they're invited in the moment they are accepted to a school.
  • School clubs can also use this technology to recruit and discuss campus issues. The sites are there for students, not for administrators
  • It will be tough to show whether these efforts played any direct role in students' decision to stay or go — that's a subject for future research
  • "That's something that they have to be proactive about," she says. "So, the Facebook app can be there. But unless you're being proactive and you want to go out and look for things like that — it's really on the student."
  •
This website talks about a 2 million dollar investment a company is making that is a school-based facebook site. It is going to be only for students and nobody else. It is a way to network among students and discuss classes. Facebook is the biggest social school and why not make it school-appropriate.

"70+ Google Forms For The Classroom" | edte.ch - 1 views

I got some great ideas from this site to use in my classroom, specifically the spelling test form. Students respond on computers to the teacher prompt. The answers are then submitted into a database and the teacher can very quickly correct the answers. There are a number of other forms that are very useful to use in the classroom.
    • Lisa LeCompte

I also read that there was a way to have the computer check the tests for you. I know it would have to be set up somehow, but it might be worth the effort if you have a lot of students.
  • 3 ) Spelling test For your weekly spelling test use simple 1-10 or 1-20 numbered form (with a name question too of course) and ask the children to type in their answers as you read out the list of words. Once these are submitted apply formula to judge if they are correct or not and it becomes self marking. Steve Kirkpatrick had this brainwave a while back so check out his excellent post for more information about setting up the spreadsheet. Danny also added in his comment about using the font Wingdings for smiley faces which is a nice idea although this font is not available in Google Spreadsheets. Get your own copy.

There are so many fantastic ideas. I am in LOVE with Google Forms.

21st Century Teaching Tools Engage Students and Expand the Boundaries of Learning -> Ci... - 0 views

  • Thanks to video conferencing, students in Rebecca Endt's Moss Point High School (Moss Point, Mississippi) have learned about, and made friends with, a group of children in Christine Amberg's classes in Schmiedefeld, Germany.

I still this this is fantastically cool. I would have loved to have this opportunity as a child.
  • "History is a wonderful thing, but I also want my students to think about the future," Endt says. "We can't build a sustainable future with our kids in the dark about the rest of the world."
    • nikki santos

      I can appreciate Rebecca's quote.
  • Jenny Doleac, a math teacher at Oak Grove Middle School (Hattiesburg, Mississippi) uses a Promethean ACTIVboard, an ELMO document camera, the Internet and other resources to bring mathematics to life for her students.
  •
I think the possibility of interacting with students from all around the world using video conferencing is an awesome possibility. I read about schools that are doing this, but I am interested in knowing how they get all of it set up. I wonder how they contact the schools and plan for the collaboration. It seems like it would be a daunting task, but very meaningful for all participants.

tcboe21 - My Web Wardrobe - 7 views

This chart really helps sort the different tools into categories, although I don't really like the wardrobe metaphor.

this chart is helpful. i'm not sure about the "wardrobe" thing either..
  •
I really like the categories. I'm a visual learner, so it helps me to see everything arranged this way.
  •
I looked at this chart and was rather overwhelmed. I found it distracting and difficult to read. I do some like of the links though.
  •
I have to agree with you Terry. This page was not visually appealing to me. After looking at some of the other pages like cooltoolsforschools and simplespark, this did not hold my interest. I doubt I would ever refer back to it. I like the pages that give a quick synopsis of the sites they are linking to and this page has you going out and searching on your own.
  •
I really like the idea behind this site. I've been feeling overwhelmed with all the new sites that I have visited and finding a way to categorize them so they are not forgotten. It also brings to mind another question of how to keep track of all these new passwords and usernames! I try to use the same for all sites but I am wary of duplicating passwords with sites that may have important personal information.
  •
I think the analogy would be better delivered with a more appealing format, but I also agree that I really like the idea of sorting tools in this way. You could use this as a checklist for your classes. Have I incorporated a variety of Web 2.0 tools into the course I am teaching? Am I using the more essential tools consistently? Have I used one or two more formal venues? Have I given my students the opportunity to reflect on their learning?

So concise and inspiring. This is a real testament to the power of the contemporary evolution of education when it's done right.
  • when people ask me the answer to content overload, I tell them (counter-intuitively) that it is to produce more content. Because it is in the act of our becoming a creator that our relationship with content changes, and we become more engaged

A valuable difference in how the new web tools engage learners.
  • If fewer than 1% of the users of Wikipedia actually contribute to it, what will happen when 10% do? Or 20%? There are over 100,000 blogs created daily, and MySpace alone has something over 375,000 new users (content creators) every day.

  • Trend #4: The New Pro-sumers. The word "pro-sumer" is a combination of the words "producer" and "consumer." More and more companies are engaging their customers in the creation of the product they sell them. From avid off-road bikers who created the original mountain bikes that now dominate the market, to substantial companies eliciting R&D work from a broader public. (And don't get me started on American Idol, which is a fairly brilliant way to create a superstar.) The nature not just of how knowledge is acquired, but how it is produced, is changing.
    • Paul Clark

As much as I dislike this abomination of a buzz word, "pro-sumer" I agree that students must be prepared to produce in order to compete in the new workforce.
  •
I liked this article too, especially the quote "The Internet is becoming a platform for unparalleled creativity, and we are creating the new content of the Web." This is sooooo true.

14 Ways K-12 Librarians Can Teach Social Media « NeverEndingSearch - 1 views

  • This is the best time in history to be a teacher-librarian. Major shifts in our information and communication landscapes present new opportunities for librarians to teach and lead in areas that were always considered part of their role, helping learners of all ages effectively use, manage, evaluate, organize and communicate information, and to love reading in its glorious new variety.
    • mlotoole

I love the positivity evident in this opening to the article. "This is the best time in history to be a teacher-librarian." As we read about treasured aspects of the library becoming obsolete, it sure is nice to think that we are still very much needed as school librarians, that we have "new opportunities" even. And it is exciting -- all the new technologies available to help engage in all steps of the inquiry and creative processes.
  • in a networked world, the position is more that of moderator or coach, the person who ensures that students and teachers can effectively interact with information and leverage it to create and share and make a difference in the community and beyond

The new role of School Librarian
  • Librarians have always advised students on information ethics, but, unfortunately, in the recent past we’ve acted more as gatekeepers than cheerleaders. Two major intellectual-property shifts allow us to emerge as media-creation cheerleaders.

Creative Commons and Fair Use We've talked a lot about not wanting to be the "Copyright Right" police. I really connected with this concept of being the "Copyright Cheerleader" instead. We can empower our students as we teach them to ethically use and share information.
