Libya protests break out after Friday prayers | World news | guardian.co.uk - 1 views

  • Several hundred demonstrators gathered in Tajura, an area east of the capital, chanting: "Gaddafi is the enemy of God."
  • Gaddafi launched an offensive to retake Zawiyah, which had passed into rebel hands, and residents said 30 civilians had been killed.
  • In the east, rebels attacked the oil town of Ras Lanuf, which lies on a strategic coastal road, claiming to have taken its airport.
  • ...9 more annotations...
  • In the town, which is about 50km (30 miles) west of Tripoli, pro-Gaddafi forces fought for hours with rebels who have been holding the town centre, according to Reuters.
  • Hundreds of victims are now in the town hospital."
  • "Our men are fighting back the force, which is big," the resident told Associated Press.
  • Gaddafi's forces have been unable to take back significant ground while his opponents, ragtag citizen militias backed by mutinous army units, lack the resources to take Tripoli.
  • Protesters tore down posters of the Libyan leader and spraypainted walls with graffiti reading: "Down with Gaddafi" and "Tajura will dig your grave."
  • after the march began, officers fired teargas at the crowd. The protesters scattered, but quickly regrouped before security forces fired live ammunition, scattering the protesters again. It was not immediately clear if the shots had been fired in the air or at the marchers.
  • "I am not afraid," one marcher told Associated Press. The 29-year-old said one of his relatives had been shot dead in protests a week ago – not by militias, but by a pro-Gaddafi infiltrator at the demonstrations. "There are many spies among us. But we want to show the world that we are not afraid," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of fears of retaliation.
  • In protests last Friday, pro-regime militiamen opened fire immediately on the marchers, killing and wounding a still unknown number. Since then, Gaddafi forces have seized suspected dissidents in night raids. Bodies of people who disappeared have been left in the street and militiamen have searched hospitals for the wounded to take away.
  • "We are people who fight, we don't surrender," Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the former justice minister, told cheering crowds in al-Bayda in the rebel-held east of the country. "Victory or death. We will not stop till we liberate all this country … The time of hypocrisy is over."

Libya protests: 140 'massacred' as Gaddafi sends in snipers to crush dissent - Telegraph - 0 views

  • Snipers shot protesters, artillery and helicopter gunships were used against crowds of demonstrators, and thugs armed with hammers and swords attacked families in their homes as the Libyan regime sought to crush the uprising.
  • Libyan special forces launched a dawn attack on Saturday against hundreds of protesters, including lawyers and judges, camped in front of the courthouse in Benghazi. "They fired tear gas on protesters in tents and cleared the areas after many fled carrying the dead and the injured," one protester said by phone from the city.
  • A Libyan journalist said of the African mercenaries: "The soldiers are vicious killers. People are so terrified of them that they've been doing everything possible to get away. "Women and children were seen jumping off Giuliana Bridge in Benghazi to escape. Many of them were killed by the impact of hitting the water, while others were drowned."
  •
This article more or less went into detail about how Gaddafi is revolting against the people who are protesting. When lawyers and citizens camped in protest he had his military shoot round after round of tear gas into their tents and had his anklets fire upon many of the citizens. It also says that there are even videos that have been posted of people running away from this carrying their dead children and family members and also families are jumping off bridges in a desperate attempt to escape from this tragic on-slaught and many of those families who jumped in desperation died from the fall and the shock of everything happening around them. This is one of the more tragic things that i have read about on the Libya protests and it draws my attention closer frowanting to help in any way possible even if it is just talking about it to as many people as possible, this is Aidan Hren thanks for listening

What do you know about the Telegraph? Why do you think this is a trustworthy source for information?
  •
Well I think that the telegraph is a credible resource because it is a UK website and most of the sites I've used by them were credible and added up and or been very similar to credible sources such as The New York Times.

Culture - Libya - 0 views

  • Libyan Social Life Libya is a highly conservative Islamic society. Because of over crowding, many Libyans live in single homes with extended family. High-rise buildings can be seen only in large cities meant for offices and apartments. Rural people live in stone or mud brick houses often having a single room for all their activities apart from a shed for animals. Despite conscious efforts by the government, there is repression of women, excepting those living in coastal cities. Even till today, women have very little educational opportunity and it is not quite common to see working women.

Not bad - I guess when I read that source it seems like it's actually a little general. You could use it briefly to kind of set the stage for the project, though I think it would be good to get more in to the political situation - why is this a country in which protests and revolutions might occur?
  •
This article is more or less just background information on libyan life and it just tells like how and where people are living. It says how a lot of people are living in mud houses and how like multiple families would live in one house all crowded together like chimpanzees in a zoo.

Gaddafi blames the world - 0 views

This article mostly talks about what is currently happening in Libya more so than why it is happening. This article also discusses gadaffis plans to blow up oil production facilities that supply Europe as a revolt against them. I'm not sure why exactly he is doing this but he has caused many deaths so far and massive amounts of people are being slaughtered even if they are expected to be acting against gaddaffi or his government that he has placed in power.... That's all I really got out of this article, if I learn more I'll post it at a later date. Thanks buh bye

  • "They say today 200 died in my city. I don't know if my family is among them or not," Joe said.
  • "Libya is like prison. You can't say anything. Every word you say will be counted on you; they will make a file for you if you say anything against the regime."
  •
This article is about two Libyan teens who were studying the violence from the Gadhafi regime At the University of Texas. The people that are interviewing them will not release there names in fear that Gadhafi will go after their family. So basically if he knows anyone that is protesting against him he will come after them!! Based on this article Libya Is like prison, You can't say anything. If you do it will be hold against you and kept into a file. That's what i got out of this article. I don't know why he is doing this.
  •
Mmmm mm mm just like prison, can't say nothin up in there or else you gonna die
  •
This is a good article, Sami. And I like the multi-color highlighting. Are you in charge of talking about reasons for the revolution?
