McNugget Number -- from Wolfram MathWorld - 0 views

  •
"A McNugget number is a positive integer that can be obtained by adding together orders of McDonald's® Chicken McNuggets" While these numbers are interesting in themselves, I'm particularly taken by the idea of building an interesting problem based on consumer or popular culture. What other prompts might we find in a similar vien?

I started this group almost as a lark but it's starting to take on a life of it's own and I'm humbled and overjoyed to see how it's evolving. It has quickly become a valuable resource for me as a math teacher.

Keep the links coming, all of them, but I'd like to try a little experiment with you all if you're willing, I'd like to suggest monthly themes for the links we collect.

All links are welcome always, but for the month of May, let's try to gather links that focus on research in mathematics education that can be quickly implemented into our teaching. Stuff like this:

    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/04/090410143809.htm

Let's all use the tag: Research for these links so we can find them all easily.

I'd also like to ask that someone else suggest another "theme" for us for the month of June and each of the months that follow.

We can have fun with this, and learn a lot together too.

    What do you say?

It would be interesting to build a set a links to similar research results as this and discuss the implications this has for what we do as math teachers in our classrooms.

New research from Vanderbilt University has found students benefit more from being taught the concepts behind math problems rather than the exact procedures to solve the problems. The findings offer teachers new insights on how best to shape math instruction to have the greatest impact on student learning.
