It's final exam time for most of us in higher education. We are scrambling to give final exams, grade student work, submit grades, and leave for the winter break with just a little bit of sanity and a few working brain cells. Then it hits: the excuses for missing or late work.

As teachers, we often expect our students to be reasonably tech-savvy. We're even more likely to have this expectation when (a) we're reasonably tech-savvy ourselves, even though we have no formal training, and (b) we're old enough--or nearly old enough--to be our students' parents. Students should be able to compute circles around us, right? Maybe not.
