Small business startup Wave Accounting has raised $12 million in its second round of funding, the company announced today.

Winter launched Squag, a social space for children with autism or those who communicate differently. For the past 11 years, she has worked as an aide to her austistic nephew, who she calls spectacular and the strongest person she knows. Kids like him are totally underestimated, she says, which compelled her to build Squag to help them express themselves and communicate - in an almost artist-like way - as well as develop friendship and connection.

It stimulates a stickiness that will allow partners to more effectively monetize that audience wherever & however they are engaged. It's the logical next step in live sport and live event production licensing, broadcasting, and marketing.

Veegage is one of the startups based with MaRS's new Jolt accelerator is creating a tool for infographic creation. JOLT has also posted the first segment of its Jolt TV series on the Financial Post.

"We need to get the word out that, whether you're male or female, this is an exciting field with limitless opportunities," she says.

"Toronto-based Guardly, a startup providing mobile apps and dashboard tools to help increase personal safety, today announced a partnership with Code Blue, one of the earliest pioneers of emergency phones for high traffic, high risk areas like hospitals, campuses and airports."

MaRS Discovery District is expanding. MaRS' Phase 2 development will be completed in 2013. Don Duval, Vice President of Advisory Services states " Our mandate is to work with early stage ventures and help these companies grow ... The program's success, he says, is measured by "the amount of jobs and wealth our companies notable successes.

This round of financing builds on a $2.2 million seed round raised in 2010, led by MaRS Innovation.

Winston is a Toronto company that is pitching a different way to operate the way people call for a taxi and limo through an app. The company Winston is working with MaRS Discovery District Advisors.

According to Nestor Arellano from IT Business, "The small business and tourism minister, who also heads Ottawa's Red Tape Reduction Commission, says the government has been in entrepreneurs' pockets and backs long enough." Maxime Bernier, Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism spoke at the Small Business 2011 conference at the MaRS Discovery District.
