The profession of a plumbing is the one which requires some special skills, as it deals with installing and maintaining the plumbing systems. The word
    plumber
dates back to the Roman empire. In the ancient Roman empire, Lead was known as "Plumbum", hence the abbreviation for lead was taken as "Pb" in the periodic table. In those days, roofs of the Roman buildings used pipes and conduits made up of lead i.e., Plumbum for the drainage of water, hence any person working on such drainage systems made up of lead, in those days, came to be known as "plumber".Plumber NOW

During the medieval era, any person, who use to work with lead was known as a plumber, and that does not mean that every time a person who is working with the drainage systems, made up of lead would be called so. Lead was also used by many other professions, for creating and manufacturing new equipments with this metal, so any person dealing with such a work related to plumbum/lead was called by this name in those days.

In today's world, plumbing is strictly related to the installation and maintenance of potable (drinking) water, drainage and sewerage systems. Without the plumbing work, no building is complete. Plumbing work is one of the chief factors in the overall construction of any building. Supply of water, its storage, use, recycling and drainage, all these things cannot be executed without the help of an effective plumbing system in place.

Today we see all kinds of buildings, from tall skyscrapers to large stadiums, and from big shopping malls to huge dams. Everywhere, without the installation and management of an effective plumbing system, these man-made structures are nothing. Today, there are many universities and institutes, that offer quality training and education in creating a state-of-the-art plumbing system for any building.

Plumbing as a study is one of the main features of civil engineering, and so it becomes highly essential to appreciate the work of professionals dealing with plumbing. Without these men, every city will come to a halt. No drinking water facility, storage, drainage etc. can take place, with the efforts of these men. Their profession is not at all a second grade profession, because without them, all places will either dry up or flood with water due to lack of proper drainage facility available.
