Design Thinking: Tools to help make thinking visible \ The Lab - 1 views

  •
"Design thinking is not rocket science, but when a school is trying to bring a concerted approach to thinking differently, it helps for people to have a common set of tools and language on which to pull or things can appear complicated quite quickly."

Left Bank Learning: When "Work Time" Becomes "Studio Time" | Edutopia - 2 views

  • In my class, for example, we use blogging, a G+ community, Twitter with a class hashtag for backchanneling and Questions of the Week, Diigo for social bookmarking and collaborative annotation, and the entire suite of Google Apps for Education.

YEAH! I LOVE the fact that she doesn't try to keep the outcomes (probably not the correct word choice) of learning "contained" in a single LMS. This is a point of discussion for me when we try to promote single "containers" for learners...
  • Offer a Creative Toolbox Consider having a brainstorm wall of apps and tools useful for creating films, editing photos, etc. My students help curate this, and even include inspiring artists to follow on Instagram and Vine. They simply write the name on a Post-it and affix it to a giant white poster. I have a G+ community and a Diigo folder for all my "creativity" resources, many of which are tools I happen upon online but don't have the time to try out. If students test them, they can write reviews.

This article SCREAMS at me! I love it and the Specs within. Definitely worth a close read and think!

New Milford High School Pushes the Envelope on 21st Century Education - NJ Spotlight - 0 views

  • “There is no one-size fits all model, no two Makerspaces should be the same. It should reflect the needs, wants, and ability of the students,” explained Fleming. Fleming stresses the importance of creating a Makerspace that fits the environment. The students must be an integral part of the process so they can take ownership of the space and want to be a part of it.
  • The fixed stations include a Lego set for challenges, a Makey-Makey kit for redesigning technology, a Little Bits bar for robotics, a 3-D printer for designing and creating, and a take-apart station for dismantling outdated computers. Flexible stations include a molecular gastronomy kit used to make outlandish flavor combinations like chocolate caviar and a toothbrush robotics kit.
  • “Trust not only that your students can handle the space but also trust them to learn and fill in the blanks of what you might not know as an educator,” Fleming said.

  • “Having a little lesson or course on how to take apart a computer would help take the mystery away from computers,” explained Yachouh, who went on to make a suggestion, “Get a student who understands this stuff well to teach the other kids how to take apart a computer successfully and maybe put it back together.” She feels this would maintain the student-driven mission of the space, while providing a greater opportunity for learning.

Learning to unlearn - Paul Hamilton - 0 views

  • This process often requires getting out of the way and listening, rather than positioning myself at the centre of everything creative.
  • Being passionate and caring about what you’re making matters, but it can also hold you back.
  • After some reflection it occurred to me that at this part of the process my role should be helping other people articulate their ideas and bring them into the conversation.

  • When you’re at this level of fidelity it takes discipline to not ‘finish’ the design. Nothing is ever finished. It’s important not to fall in love with ideas at an early stage without validation.
