This is a blog by my colleague, Jeff Martin, 8th grade social studies teacher. The entries are a combination of historical day trips, graduate level travel courses, and little stops along the way. He is a great story teller.

In Defense of Helicopter Parents - Motherlode Blog - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • Beyond such undeniable excesses, a quiet reappraisal of helicopter parents is underway. Some researchers have begun to argue that late adolescence and young adulthood are such minefields today - emotional, social, sexual, logistical, psychological - that there are valid reasons for parents to remain deeply involved in their children’s lives even after the kids are, technically speaking, adults. Moreover, they say, with the economy in a deep swoon, helicopter parents may have a vital role to play as career counselors or even as providers of financial aid to their offspring.

Just wondering what people think of this? I'm not a parent yet, so I only see things from a teacher's perspective...

I think, as the article says, that the term has been attached to the extreme parent whose well-meaning attempts to help or guide a child has become interference ith the child's more basic need to learn from experience. Yes, teach them to look both ways and stay away from drugs, etc, but don't rush to school to prevent a punishment for something that they truly should be punished for. I had my share of Helicopter parents, and they're no fun to deal with.

The Committed Sardine - blog - 0 views

  • Chris Sherman, president of Searchwise, said Google, Yahoo, Microsoft's Bing, and newcomer WolframAlpha are the four main search engines that benefit researchers.
  • Social media, I think it's a fad. I think it will not have lasting value as a search medium. I think that there's a lot of focus on searching Facebook and searching Twitter and things like that. I just don't see it. I see lots and lots of problems with that," he said.

Wordle Blog: Tagul - 0 views

  • Many folks have asked for a Wordle that fits into a shape. Others have asked for “clickable” Wordles, which could be used for navigation. I’m happy to say that someone (who identifies himself only as “Alex”) has created a service that meets both of those needs. I’m not endorsing his site; I’m just letting folks know about it. Tagul: http://tagul.com/ It requires signing up with either a new Tagul account, or via some OpenID provider, so I can’t provide a demo here. As you might have guessed from the way Wordle works, I don’t like signing up for toys.
