Thoughts from Third - 0 views

  • Number 1: Step Away from the BoardMove over. Put your students on the stage. Coach them well and send them to the Board. Use your SMART Slate to get out of in front of your classroom. We all know that students learn best and remember more by doing it themselves, so let them. Play during your conference period or after school. Why should teachers have all the fun?

The Stock Market for the Rest of Us - WeSeed - 0 views

This is a good web site that students can play the stock market. Students can research companies, trade, etc. and it allows them to build a portfolio. It also has videos to use for teaching the stock market and some fun games. It also allows for blogging with others who are playing the game. I used this with my General Business class while studying stocks. I did have to get special permission from Tech. to allow students to set up a gmail account.

Free documentaries - many from sources like National Geographic. You can 'snag' the video and embed it in another site or a blog. This would be an advantage to engaging students outside the classroom.

I find the fact that there are 800 million Facebook users to be a little bit disturbing. It's like something out of a science fiction novel where we are all hooked up to a apperat 24.7 pumping data through a stream.

All this even though I am one of those 800 million, at least at this point.

The Center for Teaching History with Technology - 1 views

The Center for Teaching History with Technology is a great tool that uses resources that we have worked with in this course including Google Docs, Wikis, blogs, and more. The Social Studies resources include games, activities, plans, and mores. While I am not an educator, I think it is important to implement these types of tools in the classroom.

10 awesome iPad / iPod apps - 0 views

  •
This blog post in History Tech shares several great tools for the iPad and iPod that educators could use. The most interesting tools I feel would be helpful for a Social Studies Teacher would be the US Historical Documents as well as the World Fact Book. My favorite Web 2.0 tool on this list which I have used is the My Congress application where you can learn more about those who represent you in the United States Congress. This tool would be great for government classes! All of these resources appear to be very helpful for educators.

iPhone + OpenCongress = Real Time Congress - Blog - OpenCongress - 0 views

This is a great application to be able to follow what the congressional committees and both bodies of Congress are doing each day. It even includes schedules for each day Congress is in session. When I interned in the US Senate, this would have been a great application to use instead of printing schedules each day. I know of several people working in politics who use this application.
