Are some of your students finished with the Twilight series and suffering from withdrawal?  Try some of these great supernatural reads with a romantic twist.

We have the City of Gold series in our library but sent on the Tithe series to Jen at NBCHS. I read both of those series and felt the second one was better at a high school. Has anyone seen the graphic novel based on Twilight?

Graphic Novels - Elementary and Middle School « Georgia Library Media Associa... - 5 views

  •
I've talked to some elementary librarians who are a reluctant to order many graphic novels because they're afraid there aren't any good ones for our younger students. Another issue is whether or not graphic novels are important or useful for our students' literacy development. I'm going to tackle both of these issues here.
  •
We recently purchased a graphic novel series called BabyMouse. We can't keep it on the shelf. Boys and girls in grade 2 read it as well as girls in grade 5. They haven't been read by anyone else because the students just rotate them through their class. All the art is done in pink white and black. I think its a good example of a graphic novel good for younger students.

CM Magazine: Canadian Aboriginal Art and Culture. - 2 views

  •
Review: "Part of the nine-volume "Canadian Aboriginal Art and Culture" series, these books provide information about a variety of topics, including homes, clothing, food, tools and weapons, religion, celebrations and ceremonies, music and dance, language and storytelling, and art. In fact, with only one or two exceptions, all the chapter headings in these three titles are identical. " Recommended but NOTE: This series provides just enough information for elementary school students.

CM Magazine: Slim Goodbody's Lighten Up! series. - 0 views

  •
Several titles in this series are a fit for the Saskatchewan Health Curriculum. "Written in a narrative style, interspersed with conversation and first-person accounts, the books have 13 chapters each, plus a table of contents, a glossary, an index and a page listing a few web sites for further information. Although the books have an American slant - there are referrals to the President's Challenge fitness program, and the Food Pyramid - this does not affect the reader's understanding of the concepts presented. In fact, any time a measurement is given in Imperial form, its metric counterpart is written in parentheses, and on nutrition labels, the amounts are always given in metric form. "

This would be a useful addition to school library collections. Upper elementary reading level - information relevant to middle years health curricula.

The Moon of Letting Go: and Other Stories: Amazon.ca: Richard Van Camp: Books - 0 views

  •
"Extending the tradition of Aboriginal storytelling, Richard Van Camp's new collection is eloquently and humorously optimistic. The stories in The Moon of Letting Go celebrate healing through modern day rituals that honour his Dogrib ancestry. Van Camp speaks in a range of powerful voices: a violent First Nations gangster has an astonishing spiritual experience, a single mother is protected from her ex by a dangerous medicine man, and a group of young men pay tribute to a friend by streaking through their northern town. The stories are set in First Nations communities in the Northwest Territories, Vancouver and rural British columbia. They have been broadcast on the CBC, and appeared in anthologies, the Walrus, Prairie Fire, and other journals."

I sent an e-mail with this link to the English teachers in our school, along with a link to the book trailers. Sheila did a really successful trailer project for MacBeth last year.
  •
Would she and the students be willing to share some of the trailers? Are they on YouTube? It would be nice to have good examples to show people.
