Hi, I have a friend who wants me to make a sliding shelf for her printer on top of an existing unit. I was planning to simply use a piece of ply with drawer runners basically sandwiched between the top and shelf but then realised that drawer runners are desined to be attachhed to the vertical edges or sides rather than between horizontal surfaces. Has anyone done something like this or direct me to something I can use.

You can make a U shaped "frame".

The two sides are extremely short, just enough to attach your drawer slides to.

You then make a flat shelf and affix the drawer side of the drawer slides.

The only challenge then becomes to find a way to anchor the bottom of the U to the existing desk. Depending on desire/value of existing desk, you can use a counter sunk screw, or even a good quality double sided tape would do (it's lateral force you have to be concerned at, and double sided tape sticks well in these situations)

When I was making a bedside table in order to put it in the bedroom, my router bits broke. I started looking for good options on the Internet, came across an interesting https://www.woodroutersreviews.com/best-router-bits/ post, I could learn a lot there. I realized that it is not worth saving on such important things. I was able to choose the one that suits me. A quality tool will help you for years.
