Maybe this sheds some light on why there was such little coverage at the time! People are afraid of aggravating the terrorist organization.

In the last few paragraphs, journalist Waleed Aly (you might've seen him on Channel 10's The Project), argues that heavy media coverage on ISIS will benefit the organization. It will cause hysteria in the general public, provoke western governments to wage all-out war, giving ISIS another reason to preach hate against America, indoctrinate their young, and the cycle of violence continues. ISIS's media presence may also be an attempt to get their message out to new potential supporters in foreign countries.
