Refraction: Teaching Fractions through Gameplay - 0 views

  •
A fantastiv interactve fractions game.  Refraction is an online puzzle game for teaching fractions. The game is not obviously a lesson in fractions, but requires knowledge of fractions to succeed. In Refraction, the player must partition lasers in order to power spaceships containing various animals who have gotten stuck in space, as shown in the picture. These animal spaceships all require different fractions of the lasers, and the player is given several pieces that split and bend the lasers to reach the animals and satisfy these requirements. These mechanics can be used to teach many important fraction concepts, such as equal partitioning, addition, multiplication, mixed numbers, improper fractions, and common denominators. The game itself is instrumented so that it records everything the player does, allowing teachers and researchers to analyze play data.

This is a class blog where the students create a weekly Street 'Talk' video. The street talk is all about things happening in their school. A great example of the possibilities of flipcams in schools. Would be great to get the community interested in what was happening in the school.

What I learned from Twitter today - Teach42 - 3 views

  • This wasn’t a staff development day. It wasn’t a workshop. It wasn’t a conference or even a meeting. This was simply Thursday. A day in the life of an educator who happens to be connected to a virtual teachers lounge (credit to ArtGuy for the analogy). This is nothing more than daily conversation. And yet it’s also miraculous in so many ways.

Has blocking mobiles in schools had its day? | Teacher Network | Guardian Professional - 0 views

  • s there any evidence that schools which have allowed pupils to use their mobile phones have seen a deterioration in behaviour or a rise in online abuse?
  • Schools need to start piloting more open approaches now before they have to ban pens.
  • t a time when students can pick up a wi-fi signal on their mobiles at the back of a class, or can find education resources on their mobiles quicker than the teacher at the front, is there a vision for moving from restriction to empowerment?
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Ten years on and the internet has changed beyond all recognition. Most young people don't see it as a grey box which they log onto, but rather an ever-on, indispensable vehicle through which they live and socialise; something which they inhabit.
  • The reality of the mobile internet has made old safety advice such as keeping the internet in a family room almost redundant. It's now portable, private and in our pockets!

One-to-one computing programs only as effective as their teachers | eSchoolNews.com - 6 views

  • A compilation of four new studies of one-to-one computing projects in K-12 schools identifies several factors that are key to the projects’ success, including adequate planning, stakeholder buy-in, and strong school or district leadership.
  • school laptop programs are only as effective as the teachers who apply them.
  • a big mistake that both researchers and educators make in talking about 1-to-1 computing programs is assuming that by adding computers to the classroom, nothing else has to change.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Specifically, seventh graders in the second year of the program showed statistically significant gains on state test scores in English and language arts after controlling for prior achievement.

  •
Quote .." There's a growing list of fantastic online musical "instruments" and games that are a great resource for teachers in the music classroom.  They can be effective when used with students on laptops and desktops, but they also work really well in a one-computer classroom with a large screen or better still, an interactive whiteboard."
