Cool. I like Solar Walk a lot. Star Walk has more, but Solar Walk fits the bill for sure.

There are many free apps as well as some free online metronomes. I like them b/c they help students find rhythm in the poems that they write.

BRAIN QUEST is a curriculum-based question-and-answer game. Its content reflects national and state grade level standards. The app allows for an interactive way to review content.

I use this in addition to Leafsnap to help students get to specific nouns in writing a descriptive piece. Also excellent research resource.

Researchers from Columbia University, the University of Maryland, and the Smithsonian Institution beat me to this. They developed this free mobile app that uses visual recognition software to help identify tree species from photographs of their leaves. I use it to help students practice careful observation prior to writing. It motivates them to use specific nouns when describing a setting.

For $258 we could get 21 issues of National Geographic Explorer for the ipad (for each of our 20 ipads in the smith cart) - with 7 K-1 issues, 7 2-3 issues and 7 4-6 issues (also can be used for higher readers in 2-3). Much more cost effective then ordering paper copies, and a great way to make digital literature available in all K-5 classrooms.
