through this new + innovative use of recovered ocean plastic, we hope to show how design can be used to tackle environmental problems. we're not saying that the solution to the ocean plastic problem is making bottles out of trash, but by doing so we can prove that there are alternatives to using virgin materials-like PCR plastic, which we use in all of our bottles.

Jaime Rae, 15, was recently named the second-place winner in From the Bow Seat's 2014 Ocean Awareness Student Contest. Her six-minute video about plastic pollution in oceans beat out hundreds of other entries from around the world.

20 years later, yellow plastic rubber ducks are still appearing on our beaches having been part of a consignment of 28,000 of them lost at sea from a ship on its way from Hong Kong to the US.

Food is the largest single source of waste in the U.S. More food ends up in landfills than plastic or paper. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 20 percent of what goes into municipal landfills is food. Food waste tipped the scale at 35 million tons in 2012, the most recent year for which estimates are available.

Marine debris is any man-made, solid material that enters waterways directly through littering or indirectly via rivers, streams and storm drains. Marine debris can be simple items such as a discarded soda can, cigarette butt, or plastic bag that ends up in the ocean potentially harming marine life.

Vessels of all sizes can be sources of marine debris. Fishing vessels can be sources of fishing nets, lines, lures, rope, bait boxes, and light sticks. Recreational boats, military and other government vessels, cargo ships, cruise ships, ferries, and charter boats can be sources of galley waste, trash, plastic bags, and other materials.
