Classroom

Last year Donna Baumbach created a Google Slides presentation titled 26+ Ways to Use ThingLink In the Classroom. Yesterday, I received an email from Donna in which she shared the updated version of that presentation. The presentation now contains more than 65 tips and ideas for using ThingLink in the classroom. A number of workshops and articles are available that explain why it is useful for teachers to use technology in the classroom. Many workshops are easy to understand and feature a lot of visual aids. The workshops show teachers and students how to use email, word processing software, and how to create blogs, among other information. Workshops also show how using technology encourages learning.

The web is a wonderful tool for students in the classroom. Students can use the Internet to find information for a project or paper. The web also provides a place for students to create documents and files and to store those files. Online games help students learn in a fun and engaging manner.

Technology is a literacy that is expected in higher education and in our economy. (1) It is a universal language spoken by the entire world, regardless of the profession. Our current students will encounter one of the toughest job markets in generations. Gone are the days of falling into a profession and riding that wave for 30-plus years. However, it's not to say those jobs aren't still available. They are, but they're dwindling as automation and outsourcing continue to expand.

To teach a child, who is using photographs or objects as his visual representation system, to understand black/white line drawings, place a small black/white picture communication symbol in the corner of the various objects/photographs currently used by the child. Gradually increase the size of the picture communication symbol until it eventually covers up the entire photograph/object.

When any visual representation system is used, it is important to combine it with a written word, as many children with autism exhibit a high interest in letters and words, and some even become early readers. Therefore we should continually enhance the child's literacy skills by also providing the written word with any type of visual representation system.
