  • Seventh graders with a variety of physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities benefited from the use of laptop computers, provided to students as part of Maine’s Laptop Technology Initiative. “Overall, special education teachers viewed the laptops as highly beneficial to their students with few exceptions,” according to a teacher survey. “The laptops were credited with improving the engagement of students with disabilities with their school work; increasing their motivation and ability to work independently; and improving their class participation, interaction with other students, interaction with teachers, and class preparation. Special education teachers and parents indicated that the laptops also increased students’ personal organization. Another important finding of this study was that special education teachers perceived their special education students to have increased the quality and quantity of their writing.

Care must be taken, however, to ensure that the benefits of 1:1 are maximized for young students without taking away physical books, manipulatives, and opportunities for physical movement. 1:1 is all about students having ubiquitous access to technology when it is beneficial; it certainly does not mean that students will use technology for every single minute of their classroom experience.

  • While not a technology per se, this teaching model is using technology to change the way instructors teach. Rather than spending the class time lecturing the students, the lectures are delivered to the student’s in video format for them to watch at home (or in study hall). Then, the classroom time is set aside for 1 on 1 help, discussion, and interaction based on the lecture homework. With nearly every student carrying a mobile device or laptop, this model may give students and teachers more time to work on areas of difficulty rather than simple straight lecture. For too long, instructors have seen that precious class time go to waste while a teacher scribbles on a blackboard and has their back to the students.
