5 Innovations From The Past Decade That Aim To Change The American Classroom - 0 views

  • Some schools are cutting down on snow days, thanks to technology. Rather than giving kids the day off when weather conditions are too dangerous for commuting, these schools are asking students to follow classroom lessons online. Although kids hoping for a snow day may not particularly appreciate these advancements in digital learning, house- or hospital-bound students do -- online lessons allow these kids to complete their coursework and still interact with peers. Some students with medical conditions can "go" to school via video conferencing or even with the help of robots enabled with video chat that they can control remotel

Free Technology for Teachers: Seven Free Online Whiteboard Tools for Teachers and Students - 0 views

Education World: Technology in the Classroom | Technology Integration Ideas that Work - 2 views

  • Technology has become integrated in the classroom in so many ways, that we often don't even think about how we are using it. The Education World Tech Team offers lessons and activities to help educators make better use of technology tools for instruction, and to help students improve their technology skills within the context of the regular curriculum. Included: Integration activities that utilize the Web, PowerPoint, Excel, digital photography, SMART Boards, and more.

  • "PowerPoint is another technology tool that's exceptionally easy to use in the classroom," noted Jamye Swinford. "All kinds of research projects can be adapted to this application.
  • "Excel is another easily adaptable application," Swinford said. "Charts and graphs are a natural with Excel. This application can be used to tally results for any kind of question. Elementary students can enter results, create graphs, and compare and contrast their results.
  • "I use a SMART Board and a projector to project PowerPoint presentations for my class," John Tiffany told Education World. "It's so convenient to stand up at the board and be able to click through a presentation by tapping on the screen. I also use SMART Board for brainstorming sessions with students. I allow them to come to the board and write their own ideas. If we're doing math problems, I allow students to come to the front and work out the assignments on the SMART Board. They enjoy doing that. I then can save their brainstorming ideas or work for future reference, rather than having to copy it or risk losing it, as would have been the case if I'd used a chalkboard. I also allow students to experiment with the SMART Board during down time.
  • "Word processing is a standard application available in almost every school," Jamye Swinford agreed. "A word processing program can be used for desktop publishing; students can create newsletters and magazines, advertisements and flyers, even business cards.
  • "The drawing tools included in most word processing programs allow students to create pictures and logos, puzzles and more," Swinford said. "Stories can be illustrated. Cookbooks can be created with imported graphics or custom illustrations. Using the HTML conversion utilities, students can create Web pages from word processing documents. Interactive documents can be made with the use of hyperlinks.

This helps teachers learn more about what and how to use technology and information on the Internet. Also it provides examples of some sites and how to use them.
  • Many times, I worked with a science teacher to help students use the Internet to learn about planets, hurricanes, earthquakes, and so on," said retired K-8 computer teacher/coordinator Betty Kistler. "We would locate appropriate sites and then I would create a Web page for students to use.
  • Students sometimes worked in pairs to answer questions. I found that most teachers felt more secure using the Internet in the lab with me or in their classroom if I was there.
  • Puzzlemaker can be used by teachers and students alike to develop crossword puzzles, word searches, mazes, cryptograms, and more based on curriculum vocabulary and concepts.
  • ePals allows students to contact class or individual partners, work on writing skills, exchange weather information, compare communities, and make new friends around the world via e-mail.
  • Using PowerPoint and a projector instead of an overhead and lecture notes is another use of technology that allows me to spice up my lectures,"

Education World: Encouraging Teacher Technology Use - 0 views

  • "The TRT's model lessons with kids, find online resources for teachers, show teachers how to use equipment, provide one-on-one training during planning time, and so on. Some schools have hired they're own full-time TRTs; others share one TRT among three or four schools. One reason the program has been so successful is that teachers don't have to go to after-school training sessions or figure out technology activities on their own. The TRTs find the teachers, ask what they're doing in their classroom, and work with them to integrate technology into existing lessons.
  • "I currently teach workshops on many subjects, including digital camera use, scanning, using the mobile lab, e-mail basics, and so on.
  • "Access to technology also makes its use easier," Tiffany noted. "Until computers are made available for most students, teachers cannot be expected to utilize technology-based activities. There are a lot of activities I would like to do, but I am unable to do so because of a lack of resources.

  • This article contains the following sections: Getting Started Integrating Technology Across the Access Spectrum Getting to "Seamless" Integration Tips for Shared Hardware Creating a Professional-Development Plan Hardware and Equipment Using Technology for Feedback and Assessment The Role of Digital Citizenship
  • If your class has an interactive whiteboard and projector: Try interactive websites such as BrainPOP. Dig in to Scholastic's whiteboard activities page. Show online videos related to the lessons. Explore virtual math manipulatives. Check out the native software that came with the board. Use the videoconferencing tool Skype to connect beyond the classroom.
  • Getting to "Seamless" Integration To begin to move your tech integration to the point where it is "seamless," consider these questions: What skills are applied to nearly all tools (e.g., saving a file, naming a file, finding a file, logging in and out of accounts)? Have your students mastered these basic skills? How many different tools will you introduce this year? How many is too many? How will technology help your students better understand content -- will it push them to a deeper understanding that could not have been achieved without technology? What level of integration do you want in your classroom by the end of the school year? What specific steps must you take to achieve that goal? What is a realistic goal based on time and resources? For more on levels of technology access and what that means for tech integration, read this blog post: "What Does 'Technology Integration' Mean?" You can also check out the outstanding Technology Integration Matrix produced by the Arizona K12 Center. It provides guidance on different levels of tech integration based on readiness and current practice, and offers links to sample lessons.
  • Using Technology for Feedback and Assessment One of the most exciting aspects of bringing technology into your classroom -- and into your students' hands -- is the enhanced opportunity for timely and meaningful feedback. Quick Checks: If you want to know if your students grasp enough of a particular concept before you move on, you can use tools such as Poll Everywhere, Socrative, or Mentimeter to get a quick snapshot of the class. By creating a short quiz or open-ended response question using one of these tools and having your students use an internet-enabled device to answer, you can get quick and easy feedback that will help inform your instruction. Personalized Feedback: Through the use of course-management tools such as Edmodo, Schoology, or Moodle, it is now possible for teachers to provide personalized feedback quickly and efficiently to their students. All three tools provide the ability for teachers to leave personalized comments and notes on student work, and they provide a messaging service for students who may want to send emails with questions or concerns about the course.
  • Using Technology for Feedback and Assessment
  • If you have access to a handful of mobile devices: Have students create videos using the Animoto app Record group discussions using a voice recording app. Have students record themselves reading aloud for fluency checks. Assign student-created comics using the Puppet Pals app. Offer e-books for required readings. Upload and access course content using the Edmodo or Schoology apps. Conduct research. Foster skills practice using apps specific to subject area. Collaborate using apps like Whiteboard.
