I have heard about this, has anyone any experience in doing one through Coursera ??

I took an introduction to mathematical thinking course on it last semester given by Prof Keith Devlin at Stanford. He was teaching about the links between mathematics and logic so I wanted to take the course to get that perspective. There were two lectures a week and then we took exams in relation to the lectures and he had TAs involved in the process too - PhD students in Mathematics. I bought his book on the topic but it wasn't necessary to purchase the book to undertake the course. You could receive a certificate of completion at the end. There are a lot of courses on offer as Christy highlights. But there's no credit for taking them - I think 64,000 people registered for the mathematics one.

Thanks Haydn G, thats interesting. Are they courses run for the greater good, it is all free right? or why do they run?

e-polling - 1 views

  •
I recently used a google poll to get feedback from my students on some what topics they wanted to review at the end of term. It worked great and the student response to it was really positive! This was the page I used to select which online polling software to use and I thought others might find it helpful as well.

Looks good Christy Ch, can you recommend your preference

Hey Enda, I used a google poll setup as checkboxes. I listed out all the problem the students had done and then they put a tick next to those they wanted to see done in class. Google generated a summary of responses for me and the ones with the most ticks were shown.

Interesting to take the test and see what approach one takes - also of note is that most people learn visually rather than verbally.

Brown, J.O., (2011) "Dwell in possibility: PLAR and e-portfolios in the age of information and communication technologies". The International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning, Special Issue - Prior, Experiential and Informal Learning in the Age of Information and Communication Technologies, 1-23. Judith Brown analyses E-Portfolios as a tool to document and assess experiential learning for undergraduates. She asks students to document their learning across a range of multiple sites of learning (e.g. HEIs, work, web-based, and community-based) and also from a variety of multi-media sources (e.g. audio, digital photos, video).
