Dans le cadre de l'année consacrée à l'éducation, l'Alliance mondiale pour les technologies de l'information et des communications au service du développement des Nations Unies a présenté la toute nouvelle Université du peuple (University of the People), institution à but non lucratif donnant accès à l'enseignement supérieur pour tous.
