What is flow and flow triggers by Kohler - 1 views

  •
We are especially familiar with the psychological flow triggers. In this slide, Steven Kohler who is a New York Times bestselling author, an award-winning journalist, and the cofounder and director of research for the Flow Genome Project varies flow triggers in four categories; psychological, environmental, social and creative. Kohler mentions flow triggers in more details in his book called The Rise of Superman. I watched trailers of his book beside watching this slide. I think it is a good point to relate creativity and flow in this way. Also, social and environmental aspects are essential because not in every flow moment, we're alone. So, I think this slide (and the book if you can buy) would be informative for you.

Eight Tips for Fostering Flow in the Classroom - 2 views

  •
It's every teacher's dream to have students who engage deeply with their lessons, want to learn for learning's sake, and perform at the top of their potential. In other words, teachers want their kids to find "flow," that feeling of complete immersion in an activity, where we're so engaged that our worries, sense of time, and self-consciousness seem to disappear.

I liked this article because it adds more flow elements like making kids laugh, positive realationships, and relevancy of the task and choice

Welcome to Flow in Games - 1 views

2300 years ago, Aristotle concluded that, more than anything else, men and women seek happiness..." - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1990) In the last 30 years, as a form of entertainment, video games have evolved from confined arcade activities into a mature media.Video games have deeply infiltrated our daily life and our society. As if toys expanded every child's imagination, modern videogames take advantage of a player's active involvement to open more possibilities than any other existing mediums. [Wright 2006] More and more people grow up playing video games, treating them not only as an art form but also as serious media.

An augmented reality sandbox - 0 views

This box can be informative and fun AR environment for primary or elementary school students to form topographies and simulate real time water flow in geology and science lessons.
  •
I hated geography lesson when I was in high school and while I see those kinds of application, I wish studying at high school now with those technological tools :) I think it can be really beneficial and also gain creativity of students.
  •
I thought besides making sand castles on the beach, primary or elementary students can play sand to learn topographies and water flow at the same time. And yeah why not, for high school students it can also be fun and beneficial for improving their creativity :)

It is a nice movie and a nice illustration of the flow theory:) thanks for sharing it...
  •
Actually, I really like the last verses of him; I am pretty tired, I think I'll go home now:) Because that is the way I feel when I really get tired of doing something even if the activity is in my flow channel :)
  •
So let's hope that we will have this tireness just in the end of this 'long run' of EDS542 ;)
  •
I really liked your share on this movie. This made me think of some example movies, in Dekalog 1 movie, there was this little boy who continually asked questions on life's big issues, trying to figure out meaning. His learning motivation was so high, maybe that can be an additional example :)
  •
Kiewslovski movie! I especially like the scene when father and son calculate whether the son could skate safely or not. He has a great deal of curiosity and father leads his motivation via scientific methods;)
  •
definitely Sinem :)) you summarized the kid's motivation and situation very well :))

I think teacher motivation is so crucial Şermin, thanks for sharing this. We mostly experience this and I believe that teachers and students feed each other in terms of motivation. When the teachers are demotivated, it is hard to motivate students or vice versa.
  •
I think you touched such an important but sometimes ignored issue, teachers as learners should also be motivated for sure. thanks for making a recall on this :)
  •
Şermin, most of the time I need motivation to motivate the students for learning English:) And also, I question why we ask them to learn something they dislike. I agree with Burcu, when students are demotivated, teachers lose their motivation to teach. But, if they are intrinsically motivated, teaching becomes a joy. For example, I loved teaching to 4th graders. They had such a high level of motivation that I experienced the flow while teaching them:)
  •
I also believe that teacher motivation is mutual. The two parties have to affect each other.Unfortunately we as teachers have to be the stimulators in our classes no matter how we feel during the day.One of the solution to keep teachers improve their skills and better their practises can be initiating positive school climate that is keeping teachers morale high by respecting their identity both as a teacher and valuable person in the community. Social parties,cookie-days can be alternative for teachers to have space to socialize, learn from each other and the sense of belongingness would enhance. It worked for some teachers that I worked with earlier.

I liked this article because the figüre illustrating Maslow's hierarchy of needs was illustrative. The article differentiates btw mastery and performance goals. It emphasizes self efficacy and Weiner's Attribution theory and finally has a different figure for flow.
