New York City outdoor smoking ban begins - CNN.com - 0 views

  • Smokers in New York City looking to light up in most public places will not be able to without paying a price after an outdoor citywide smoking ban takes effect Monday.
    • Purnima Malik

This is a great idea! I am just curious about how they are going to regulate this. It is possible to control something this massive? A lot of people will be unhappy about this. So there will be plenty of rebellions. But why not up the prices of such products first? Why ban smoking cold turkey?
  • make smoking illegal in New York City's 1,700 parks and on the city's 14 miles of public beaches. Smoking will also be prohibited in pedestrian plazas like Times Square.
    • Purnima Malik

Oh okay. This sounds slightly pausible. If this works then many other big cities and do the same. Then 50 years down the line we will make a smoke free America. But would that be possible since tobacco was the leading cash crop that jump started America.
  • Cigarette butts account for 75% of the litter found on New York City beaches, according to a news release from Bloomberg's office.

  • New York City follows in the footsteps of 105 municipalities (in states including California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and New Jersey) that have banned smoking on public beaches, according to data from the advocacy group Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights. Major cities include Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Seattle.
    • Purnima Malik

It is funny how this is happening everywhere and this is the first time I have heard of this.
  • "These smoke-free laws start at a local level,"
    • Purnima Malik

Will there be a federal law installed to back this up? Local laws will work only till a certain extend.
  • 100% smoke-free nonhospitality workplaces, restaurants or bars
    • Purnima Malik

Hospital's can be included into this statistic.
  • 79.4% of the country's population is covered by local and state laws banning smoking.
    • Purnima Malik

Considering that I haven't seen any difference in smoking regardless of it being in parks or hospitals I don't think that this is really working.
  • The ban will be enforced by the city's parks department, and if violators are caught, they could be fined $50.
    • Purnima Malik

      $50 fine seems too small!
  • amended three times
    • Purnima Malik

So this is a gradual thing. Okay nevermind this might just work!

Jury sworn in for Anthony trial - NashuaTelegraph.com - 0 views

  • A group of 12 jurors and five alternates was finally seated following 11 days spent sifting through candidates in Pinellas County, Fla. It was no simple task finding people who hadn’t formed opinions about the highly publicized defendant.
    • Purnima Malik

Maybe there should be law that doesn't allow high publicized cases going to court, or something like that.
  • Anthony, 25, is charged with murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee Marie.

What's with mothers killing their own children lately?
  • This selection saw one potential juror, who also happens to be a possible witness in the case, poison a pool of 50 when she spoke openly about the case before being called into the courtroom.
    • Purnima Malik

If this case was on the down low they wouldn't have a problem getting jurors in the first place. But why was a witness in the pool of juriors? And how exactly did this witness poison the pool of jurors.

  • On Friday, a spectator in the courtroom, Elizabeth Ann Rogers, shouted out, “She killed somebody anyway!” while attorneys questioned a potential juror.

And let me guess, since the defendent hasn't refused a gallery and since the defendent isn't a minor they can't close it. Again I believe that a sense of privacy is being overlooked. In the many cases I read about a similar situations they haven't had massive juror issues.
  • The juror who heard the outburst was soon let go, but the attorneys continued their questioning until there were no candidates left.
    • Purnima Malik

I think this further proves that there is a flaw in our justice system or maybe you can only go so far without conflicts of interest.
  • Perry addressed Casey Anthony directly and asked if she was satisfied with the jury. And for the first time in a long time, the people watching this case heard her speak. “With our objections,” she said, “Yes.”

Julianne McCrery, Mother of Mystery Maine Boy Charged With Murder - ABC News - 1 views

  • The boy's body was found dumped on a dirt road in rural Maine a week ago.

Tucson district in turmoil over state ban on ethnic studies - CSMonitor.com - 0 views

  • Already the target of a federal lawsuit, a controversial Arizona law that essentially bans ethnic studies in public schools has pitted the largest school district in Tucson against students, parents, and other program supporters.

Although this article may not have direct connection with everything that we have done in class so far. I think it is important to address that if a person pushes other person off this bridge it would be called murder and there would be severe consequences (time in jail, fines...), however what is the punishment for taking your on life? Would it be constitutional to declare a law that forbids sucide or something along those lines.
  • second person in five weeks to survive a plunge from San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge - a 220-foot drop that is almost always fatal.
    • Purnima Malik

I am pretty sure that the San Francisco bridge has a net under it because it has a high risk for sucide. The net was suppose to break one's fall, so the fall wouldn't be as fatal. So couldn't they be sucided for having a uneffective net. It may sound stupid, but if in today's world a someone has to take responisbility then who would be responisble for this?

Okay what makes this case different from the 17 year old boy? We can't objectify what one might be thinking or why might one perform the way they do. Going back to the other point about the charges for the boy: How is trespassing determined on a public bridge?
  • 278 people took their lives from the span between 2000 and 2010. About 677 people were deterred after going to the bridge intending to harm themselves, she said.
    • Purnima Malik

SImply put there must be something wrong, if there are so many people willing to end their lives. Where does law fall in here? Or do they just declared them mental unstable and send them off to a pysch ward. 677 people were deterred for trying to harm themselves so what makes them stop from trying to committ sucide again. Afterall, punishments are given to criminals in hopes that they will turn around when they return back into society. I know this is a touchy topic but something just doesn't seem right about the current system.

Walmart sex-bias case divides US supreme court | Business | The Guardian - 0 views

  • Conservative judges on the US supreme court sharply challenged lawyers attempting to bring the biggest sex discrimination case in history
    • Purnima Malik

The question would be whether Walmart is too big to get sued.
  • The court's justices are set to decide by June whether lawyers representing potentially more than a million women employed by Walmart can bring a class-action sex-discrimination lawsuit against the retail giant.
    • Purnima Malik

Although there is power in numbers. I don't think this will be effective because each women's case would have to be looked at carefully. Going after Walmart will generate a lot more profits, than individual branches. Everyone involved in this case will have to be on the same page and I wouldn't be easy to pull off.
  • The potentially liability in the case could reach billions of dollars. The suit began nearly 10 years ago when it was originally filed on behalf of employee Betty Dukes and five of her co-workers.

Everyone should get the right to form a union. Now companies many set some ground rules or something, but the state should not be able to determine the right for teachers to form a union. In my economics class we were watch a movie in which a nurse and a guard decide to form unions to reach out to other nurses and guards about rising salaries.
  • The GOP-backed measure cleared its final hurdle Tuesday in the state Legislature, where it passed the Idaho House on a 48-22 vote. Nine Republicans crossed party lines to oppose the bill.

I don't think of myself as a stong politcal minded person, but go republicans for opposing the bill. I don't think can make this call because unions was a huge thing ever since America was create. The people should take this to court.

More charges in deadly day care fire | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chron... - 0 views

  • A day care operator charged in a fire last week that claimed the lives of four children faces nine new charges
    • Purnima Malik

This sounds extremely strange. A day care "operator" decided to open fire. What was going on in this guy's head?
  • fled the country Saturday and is in Nigeria.
    • Purnima Malik

It still doesn't make any sense...why did she do what she did? And how was she able to fly out of the country so soon. Is she off the hook?
  • will include six for reckless injury to a child and three charges of child endangerment. Her previous charge filed Sunday stands.
    • Purnima Malik

She apparently as a record on endangering kids, was she allowed to be the day care operator? I think the victim's parents should sue her and the daycare center for letting her work there.
    • Purnima Malik

Or are all these charges for the shooting. I would say a gun less world would be better, but then the weapon would just be something else. I wonder how Tata treated the kids and how the kids treated her prior to the shooting. How was there relationship.

Lykos is crazy! Honestly, then who in the right mind would fire at kids. And if Tata is innocent then why did she run away?
  • "I was ready to hop on a plane myself."

Lykos should get sue too for covering her. By the way how exactly was Tata caught. Is article is missing a lot of information.

New York airport bomb plotter handed life sentence - 0 views

How did this conspircy come out? And what did it involved. I bet this plan involved more than one person. So did he name anyone else?
  • He was arrested in June 2007 along with three other men

No reglious thing? Ok, this man is lacking his brain if he thinks that this type of stuff goes down in some record breaking book or something. What would make a man do this?
  • handing out the life sentence that Defreitas richly deserves." The men sought to offer their plans to Jamaat Al Muslimeen, an Islamist extremist group

All of them should serve a lifetime in jail for all the lives that could have been destoryed by their plans. It's like 1st degree murder on a bigger scale. What made them get off the hook? What where the lesser crimes?

Lieberman, Collins: FBI and Pentagon could have stopped the Fort Hood shootings - 1 views

It is slightly ironic that we are talking about the privacy act and terrorism today.
  • and that makes this incident all the more tragic.
    • Purnima Malik

That what they said about 9/11. Apparently a lot of small government agencies caught wind of a couple details, but they weren't able to put the puzzle together in time.
  • Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Hasan, a psychiatrist, openly expressed his beliefs that suicide bombings were justified, that U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan were wars against Islam, that Muslim Americans in the U.S. military might engage in fratricide against their comrades and that his loyalty to his religion was greater than his sworn obligation as a military officer to support and defend the Constitution
    • Purnima Malik

This is quite outrageous! Why didn't he get fired? And couldn't he completely lose his medical license, because psychiatrists aren't suppose to bias their patients because it will confuse them and cause conflicts.

  • radicalization was praised as research on terrorism and Islam.
    • Purnima Malik

Even so, because of his profession his patients could have even more damage because now they might be inflicted with the Islamist extremism ideas and their own. This will basically will elevate their traumatic experiences.
  • The Washington JTTF reviewed Hasan's sanitized personnel evaluations and casually and erroneously concluded that his radical communications were part of legitimate research on terrorism and Islam.
    • Purnima Malik

I am glad that they will pay closer attention to it. However, I don't think Hasan mentioned that he was doing any kind of research so how are they able to assume such a thing?

'Jihad Jane': 'Jihad Jane' pleads guilty in terrorism plot - latimes.com - 1 views

  • Jihad Jane," accused of conspiring with foreign terrorists to kill a Swedish cartoonist who offended Muslims,
    • Purnima Malik

This might be too early for me to say this but, it seems like someone cannot take a joke! And what's up with the name "Jihad Jane". Is a nickname or a legal name? Is this American a male or female? (I would like to guess female because of the name Jane attached to the end.)
  • Colleen LaRose, 47, avoids a trial but sets herself up for a potential life sentence in prison and a $1-million fine. She initially pleaded not guilty in March.
    • Purnima Malik

Was Jane and LaRose working together? Why does LaRose get to avoid a trial when she obviously gave the wrong plead?
  • LaRose is accused of conspiring with others in Asia and Europe to kill Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks, who drew the prophet Muhammad's head on a dog's body in 2007.
    • Purnima Malik

Nevermind, about the whole joke thing (in my first comment.) That's a little harsh- trust me with that. At the same time when Saddam Hussein's statues were toppled over, no one bother to kill the masses who participated in that. It shouldn't matter what other people think. The truth is not everybody will like you and they might be thinking about drawing your head on a dog's body too. On a side note, I was in Model United Nations last year- in this club we skipped school to attend Mock UN meetings. The presiding officer was completely rude and annoying, so the assembly would pass around really, really bad notes about him (including drawings of him similar to the dog's body thing.) Anyways, when he found out he ran out of the room literally crying. In both cases it is an overreaction.

What's with people playing with the terrorism paranoia. It is a weak spot for many countries. Are these people just that despite for some control?
  • LaRose, who lived in Pennsburg, Pa., 35 miles north of Philadelphia, called herself "Jihad Jane" and "Fatima LaRose" online. She posted on YouTube in June 2008 that she was desperate to do something to help the suffering Muslim people. The message attracted contacts from people in Asia and Europe who invited LaRose to travel to Europe and train with jihadists, according to court documents.
    • Purnima Malik

Oh, so LaRose is Jane. It seems like she lost her original intentions "to help the suffering Muslim people." Because killing someone else doesn't do anything but hurt other people. For the record killing someone else doesn't boost (at least it shouldn't boost a mentality stable persons) confidence. She could have helped in so many other ways, it is a shame.

Man arrested with explosives outside Mich. mosque - War Room - Salon.com - 1 views

  • Roger Stockham, a 63-year-old California man, was arrested on explosives charges last week after police allegedly found him with M-80s in the trunk of his car in the parking lot of the Islamic Center of America, a Dearborn, Michigan, mosque.
    • Purnima Malik

      1) This is a Californian Man who traveled all the way to a mosque in Michigan; that doesn't make any sense. Why go that far with explosives? 3) How did this man get the M-8os explosives? 2) Was the mosque preaching extremist teachings?
  • Stockham was arraigned on Wednesday on one count of false report or threat of terrorism and one count of possession of explosives with unlawful intent, police said in a statement.

This is a good point. What will happen to Stockham? He can't be released- it is not safe, he is a walking hazard. I think he should be labeled as a domestic terrorist.
  • He says Stockham had been heard by an employee of a Detroit bar making anti-Muslim remarks, including "describing Muslims as the enemy." The employee took down Stockham's license plate and alerted police. When they found him in the mosque parking lot, police found a concealed knife on Stockham and a large amount of fireworks, including M-80 exlposives, in the trunk of his car
    • Purnima Malik

Oh wow. And if the bar employee had not called the police 500 people would have been dead today. One little thing can go a long way. Again, I am completely puzzeled about the exlposives- How much was he carrying, How did he get them, Are they legal (because I don't think they are.)?

  • whether to move the case to a different venue, a possible insanity defense, and prosecutors' push for the death penalty.

  • attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the attempted murder of two of her aides. He is accused of opening fire on a Giffords political event in a rampage that wounded 13 people and killed six others, including a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl who was born on Sept. 11, 2001.
    • Purnima Malik

After what did this guy did, it seems unjust that he is getting some time inbetween his trials. By the way, the author who added the 9- year-old girl's date of birth is slightly strange. It seems like the author is putting in more sentiment in a stressful case. I think the author should stress the amount of people affected by the shooting instead. That by itself is mor effective than the birth date.
