Life Lines - 2 views

Life Lines is a general interest science podcast of The American Physiological Society dedicated to conveying the "phizz" in physiology. Dr. Dolittle is a comparative physiologist teaching at a large university in the southwest. This sub-specialty of physiology compares different species to each other, as well as to members within a species that live in different environments, in order to understand which physiologic features affect the way organisms evolve.

Matthew - A great find. I am trying to become a member of APS and they were one of the sponsors of the conference I attended on effects of climate change on animals' physiology. The "phizz" in physiology - what a hoot! Susan

I wanted to make sure that you at least had one link that was feeding into your Bio 379 Site. I also really appreciate how easy it is keep a conversation going with Diigo. Do you have an education account? You get a few extra bells and whistles, and some other perks.

Why rats can't vomit - 1 views

Rats + Humans: Crural sling, LES Rats + Pigeons: "Crop" or "Forestomach", same purpose
  • When the crural sling contracts it pinches the esophagus closed
  • Forestomach: thin-walled, non-glandular section that receives the esophagus and serves as a holding chamber for food
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • Corpus: thick-walled, glandular section. Its walls have secretory glands that produce digestive enzymes and mucus. Digestion begins in the corpus. The pyloric sphincter controls the movement of food from the corpus to the intestines (specifically, the duodenum).
  • Diagram of the rat's stomach. Adapted from Moore 2000
  • The forestomach and the corpus are separated by a low fold of tissue called the limiting ridge
  • At the esophagus, the course of the limiting ridge bends into a U-shape and almost surrounds the esophageal opening
  • The esophagus is closed off from the stomach by the gastroesophageal barrier, which consists of the crural sling, the lower esophageal sphincter, and the several centimeters of intraabdominal esophagus that lie between them
  • Humans also have a crural sling and an esophageal sphincter, but ours are placed right on top of one another

Your presentation was very professional and well done. You were both very familiar with your paper and that definitely helped me to sort out all of the minute details of the article!
