Did that just move? on Vimeo - 0 views

A one minute animation of jeweller Dougal Haslem's work. In 2011 we commissioned a very special stop-motion animation to be made. Filmed in Dougal Haslem's studio, one of our current represented artists, this enchanting film sees his sculptural works come alive. There is always movement or implied movement in all his pieces so it is such a delight to see them run about in this film! The animation was created by Maya Toone with music by Darren Balingal. A big thank you for making such a beautiful little film for PO8!

theEYE - Grayson Perry - "I am not a potter" - YouTube - 0 views

  •
3 minute video of Grayson Perry talking about how he works. Since winning the Turner Prize in 2003, Grayson Perry has become the nation's favourite transvestite potter. In this film, he speaks engagingly about why he is an artist that uses ceramics and not a potter, and about the defining themes that run through his work. He explains the elaborate, labour intensive process involved in the making of his work and how he typically uses a variety of different techniques. Alongside the edgy undermining of our expectations of what pottery is, beauty and sensual overload are also of great importance to his practice. theEYE is an excellent introduction to contemporary artists and their works and provides an ideal resource for a wide range of audiences, including galleries, museums and colleges, as well as individual art-lover.

In the Tower: Mark Rothko - 0 views

  •
This short documentary, narrated by curator Harry Cooper, was produced by the National Gallery of Art in conjunction with the exhibition In the Tower: Mark Rothko. Approx 9 mins.  The film considers Rothko's style, which infused abstract painting with emotional significance. Recognized in the 1950s for his use of brilliant colors, Rothko changed direction in the 1960s and produced a series of canvases known as the black-form paintings. Critics and artists often associated the darkness of these works with Rothko's bouts of illness and depression, but Cooper argues that the paintings are a continuation of the painter's lifelong exploration of light.

A 4 minute video of jeweller Douglas Haslem talking about his work. In 'The Land of the Miniature' artist Dougal Haslem takes us on an intimate trip inside his studio and creative practice. Working on a small scale, he makes works that require a close viewing to discover their complex delights. As he describes, 'I interpret anthropomorphic forms in collected objects and then by using traditional gold and silvermsithing techniques, I can recompose those forms and elements and make miniature characters'. Many thanks to George Katsalidis for his filming and editing, and to Dougal Haslem for kindly letting us into his studio and chatting so openly about his practice.

Midsummer light by Tord Boontje makes the home "softer and more humane" - YouTube - 0 views

  •
2 1/2 minute video of artist, designer, sculptor Tord Boontje London designer Tord Boontje explains how Midsummer light, the decorative paper lampshade he designed in 2004 for Artecnica, challenged the dominance of Minimalist design. Boontje's Midsummer light, which he designed for Los Angeles design company Artecnica in 2004, consists of two sheets of Tyvek - a tear-proof synthetic paper material - stamped with a delicate floral pattern. The two sheets are draped around a simple plastic cone to create a perforated lampshade that casts a soft, dappled light. "Midsummer Light is directly inspired by lying under a tree and seeing the sunlight going through the leaves," Boontje says in the movie, which Dezeen filmed at his studio in London. Boontje is one of a number of designers who has led a move away from Minimal design to return to more decorative themes over the last 20 years. He reveals that his interest in decoration started when his daughter was born in 2000. "I had a very strong desire to make my own home like a nest, like a very loving environment," he explains. "I wanted to make the home softer, warmer and more humane."
