One of the rights accorded to the owner of copyright is the right to reproduce or to authorize others to reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords. This right is subject to certain limitations found in sections 107 through 118 of the copyright law (title 17, U. S. Code). One of the more important limitations is the doctrine of "fair use." The doctrine of fair use has developed through a substantial number of court decisions over the years and has been codified in section 107 of the copyright law.

Musopen is an online music library of copyright free (public domain) music. We want to give the world access to music without the legal hassles so common today. There is a great deal of music that has expired copyrights, but almost no recordings of this music is in the public domain. We aim to record or obtain recordings that have no copyrights so that our visitors may listen, re-use, or in any way enjoy music. Put simply, our mission is to set music free.

We decided to fill in the gap by developing an honest, accurate, and balanced curriculum that would help students understand and exercise their digital rights and responsibilities. Working with educators from around the country, we aimed to design a fun and flexible plan that would not just provide information, but also help foster basic skills in research, writing, and critical thinking.

The Stanford Copyright & Fair Use site was started by Mike Keller, Vicky Reich and Tim Stanley in 1996 to support a talk that Mike was about to give. The talk was about the Michigan Documents Services case and whether it was Fair Use for a local copyshop to make coursepacks for university students. The idea for the site was proposed on a Wednesday and the site was up and running by the next Monday.

This could be very helpful for those who struggle with making sense of digital copyright, creative commons, and other issues related to digital intellectual property rights.
