Everybody on the mechanical team should get an Autodesk login account. With this account we will be able to upload our documents into the Autodesk 360 cloud. Also we can use the cloud computing power to do structural analysis and 3d rendering.

Go to the Autodesk link dedicated for First(FRC) students and click on the link to create an account. http://www.autodesk.com/education/partners/first/recommended-software

They have a section of recommended software. We will be using the Autodesk Inventor Professional software package for the design of our robot. Once you have your account you should download and install this package our your machine.

Here is the link as well: http://www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/inventor-professional

There is also a service pack and an update to the service pack that you should install as well.Windows 8 will not work without the service pack.

Service Release One(SP1) can be found here. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=22322619&linkID=9242019

There is also an update to the SP1 service pack. Here is the fix.

Now that you have Inventor installed you will want to go though the first 5 of 6 videos on the opening splash page. They are the "Overview", "Fundamentals", "Create a 3D Model", "Create a 3D Water Bottle", and "Place and connect parts". The last video is about importing existing files. We won't need this to start with.

You should also watch the YouTube video series called "Built by Design" which was put together by other FRC students. I have watched them and they are very informative and specific to what we are going to be doing.

Do not forget to download the Tutorials. Get them here.

    http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=21952055

When you press F1 while in Inventor it will open a web page with all the inventor help. They have a very good section of tutorials with references to the materials in the link above. Just download the tutorial files and make it the current project and start going though them. They are about one hour each.

We will use Autodesk 360 for collaboration and the software that is packaged with Inventor does not work very well. You can find out if you need to update 360 here. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=21520422&linkID=9240698

To test your 360 version which should be running in the system tray, you will want to right click on the little 360 icon and select preferences. This will tell you what version of 360 is running. The link above needs the version information in order for you to make the proper decisions about the update.

If you can not find the 360 icon in the system tray then you will need to start it. Click on the start button and enter 360 in the search box and it should find the application for you to run to get it started.
