YouTube - Kseniya Simonova's Amazing Sand Drawing - 8 views

  •
This video shows the winner of "Ukraine's Got Talent", Kseniya Simonova, 24, drawing a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II. Her talent, which admittedly is a strange one, is mesmeric to watch. The images, projected onto a large screen, moved many in the audience to tears and she won the top prize of about £75,000. She begins by creating a scene showing a couple sitting holding hands on a bench under a starry sky, but then warplanes appear and the happy scene is obliterated. It is replaced by a woman's face crying, but then a baby arrives and the woman smiles again. Once again war returns and Miss Simonova throws the sand into chaos from which a young woman's face appears. She quickly becomes an old widow, her face wrinkled and sad, before the image turns into a monument to an Unknown Soldier. This outdoor scene becomes framed by a window as if the viewer is looking out on the monument from within a house. In the final scene, a mother and child appear inside and a man standing outside, with his hands pressed against the glass, saying goodbye. The Great Patriotic War, as it is called in Ukraine , resulted in one in four of the population being killed with eight to 11 million deaths out of a population of 42 million. Kseniya Simonova says: "I find it difficult enough to create art using paper and pencils or paintbrushes, but using sand and fingers is beyond me. The art, especially when the war is used as the subject matter, even brings some audience members to tears. And there's surely no bigger compliment." Please take time out to see this amazing piece of art. click on the link below - http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=vOhf3OvRXKg

"Kids in today's school system are not being prepared well for tomorrow's world. As someone who went from the corporate world and then the government world to the ever-changing online world, I know how the world of yesterday is rapidly becoming irrelevant. I was trained in the newspaper industry, where we all believed we would be relevant forever - and I now believe will go the way of the horse and buggy."

Great Free Text Messaging Tools to Use with your Students - 0 views

"Mobile devices are ubiquitous among students. The majority of them use a cell phone of some sort be it a smart phone or just a plain one. While solid scientific research on the potential use of the these tools in education is still lacking, more and more educational experts are talking about its use in the classroom. This is mainly due to the inevitability of these devices in our students lives. You can see how eager students become when the recess bell rings , the first thing they do when they are out is checking their mobile. "

Video Tutorial - How to Create An iPad App List Using iTunes Store Links | iPad Academy - 1 views

"A short time ago I published a list of "starter apps" for the iPad, most of them free. I've had several questions about how I created this app list, so I made a video describing the process. The method I describe isn't the only way to build an app list document or to share a favorite collection of apps with others. For example, you could save a step and just drag and drop the title of the app into a document once you find the app in the store. It will become a live link and look like this - Merriam-Webster Dictionary HD"

" Posted by Gary Rosenzweig on 1/26/12 Screen Capture From Mail Want to email someone a quick screen capture? You don't need to capture the screen, save to a file, and then attach it to an email. You can do it all from right inside Lion Mail. Just write your email, and then choose Mail, Services, Capture Selection From Screen. Then you can grab whatever it is you want to show them and it automatically becomes an attachment in the message. You can also do this from inside other applications like TextEdit or Pages."

10 Big Reasons We Need to Reinvent the School Year - Online Colleges - 2 views

  •
"The American school year has been largely unchanged for decades, despite evolutions in culture, demographics, technology, and a wide range of other social and economic factors. In our increasingly global economy, this is starting to become a disadvantage, especially as students in many school districts are struggling to meet national standards and are simply unable to keep up with their international counterparts, many of whom spend many more hours in the classroom than they do. While there is no one magic solution to reforming schools, many districts around the nation have sought to level the playing field by adding more time to the school day or school year to more closely match those of other nations. While some changes have been more successful than others, what is clear is that the school year that worked for students decades ago simply isn't practical for today's students. Read on to find out some of the biggest reasons many are moving to extend or rearrange the school year for American students."
