Apple - Shell Scripting Primer: Introduction - 0 views

  •
You should read this document if you are interested in learning the basics of shell scripting. This document assumes that you already have some basic understanding of at least one procedural programming language such as C. It does not assume that you have very much knowledge of commands executed from the terminal, though, and thus should be readable even if you have never run the Terminal application before.

fseventer - Visualize file system changes as they occur. - 0 views

  •
Provides a graphical representation of the file activity on your Mac. Example use could be to determine what files are changed via software installation, preferences, etc.
  •
I use this software to help me determine what files are being created and modified during a small to midsize software installation. With the information gathered from fseventer I can use Iceberg to put together a customized package to use with ARD's remote install.

I love this software, although it may be tough to figure out at first. It makes perfect sense once you understand what the software is designed to do for you. I love that it gives you full control of the file ownership, permissions, and location of every file that is installed as part of the package you create. Perfect for those tricky applications that require special configuration to mesh with your systems.
