when you actually look at what happens when you add a lot of surveillance, it doesn't make it any easier to find the needles; it just makes the haystack bigger. On September 11 American intelligence agencies knew everything they needed to know to prevent the attack, they just didn't know they knew it.

FCC: Comcast violated 'net neutrality' principles - ESchoolNews Aug 01, 2008 - 0 views

  • The commission did not assess a fine, but it ordered Comcast to stop cutting off transfers of large data files among customers who use a special type of file-sharing software.
  • The FCC action arose when bloggers reported that Comcast customers who used peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing software such as BitTorrent were noticing their transmissions were aborting prematurely.

So, you build on a BY-NC work and register your copyright. You license your new work also BY-NC. Someone violates the copyright on your work. You sue. You are entitled to statutory damages right? You collect. Are you now guiilty of violating the NC licneses of the works yours built upon?

Cory Doctorow: Copyright enforcers should learn lessons from the war on spam - Guardian... - 0 views

  •
Every legislative and normative proposal recapitulates the worst mistakes of the spamfight: from Viacom's demand that Google automatically detect copyright-infringing videos while they're being uploaded; to the three-accusations-and-you're-offline proposal from the BPI; to the notion in the G8's Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement of turning copyright holders into judge, jury and executioner for what content can travel online and who can see it.

Digital Copyright Slider - Creative Commons - Jane Park, July 17th, 2008 - 0 views

  •
Check out the digital copyright slider. The tool itself is pretty simple. You basically slide the arrow up and down the years starting from "Before 1923″. The boxes on the left (Permission Needed? and Copyright Status/Term) tell you whether a work is still copyrighted or whether it's now in the public domain, free for you to use and repurpose any way you like. Unfortunately, actually figuring out the copyright status of a work isn't so simple as dragging your mouse-most of the years seem to be marked by a fuzzy period of "Maybe".

BBC - It's not the Gates, it's the bars by Stallman, 3 July 2008 - 0 views

To pay so much attention to Bill Gates' retirement is missing the point. What really matters is not Gates, nor Microsoft, but the unethical system of restrictions that Microsoft, like many other software companies, imposes on its customers.
