    What Kung Fu Means

The meaning of kung fu, because so many people know, refers to Chinese martial arts. The term "kung fu" was coined each time a westerner visiting China saw people practicing fighting styles. Curious, he asked what we were looking at doing. Jokingly, one person said, kung fu. This word is more literally translated, means "hard work" and also "human achievement". But is now to refer mostly on their martial arts.

Older terms are generally Quan Fa, Chang Guo Quan, together with Quan Shu. These were to describe the fist or battling method (quan). With modern days, Wu Shu is normally used. Xuan Ji Bu: The False or Tricky Stance

All the body-weight is on the back foot, which is placed at right angles on the front, with heels around 18" apart. The front foot's toe rests lightly among the bushes and turned 20% inwards (protecting the groin). Sometimes also referred to as the 't' stance, in Xuan Gi Bu the trunk leg is always slightly bent.

The following defensive and counter-attacking Back Stance catches the unwary by surprise. The rear foot location of body-weight, removing the head from danger, gives time to anticipate threats and offer surprise front-kick counters from the 'False'/weightless front leg, ideally positioned for this 'trick'.

This stance encapsulates many of the essential principles of back-foot fighting which is refined into a fine-art in Shaolin Kung Fu..

Jin Gi Du Li: Golden Rooster Stands with Its Hind Leg

From the False-Stance, straighten the backside supporting-leg. Standing on this draw leading foot backwards, inwards and upwards until adjacent to and covering (but not touching) its leg, toe pointing downwards together with knee above waist-height.

That protects the knee, groin together with supporting leg, enabling speedy 'chambered' kicking. A higher transitional stance, jin Gi Du Li should be held briefly for kicking purposes for a counter-attack, or as some sort of prelude to withdrawal or escape.

    Over-all

That protective, risk-reducing features these four basic 'Longfist' stances permit their safe use with regard to attack, counter-attack and support. Pre-arranged practice sequences or 'sets' of continuous transitions between various stances help to highlight their dynamic inter-relation. Beginners should find stance practice initially irksome but may possibly relish it after an occasion.
