Very interesting story about a new report from the folks at the Nieman Foundation at Harvard (major, huge, prestigious journalism think tank) and what Twitter is doing to campaign coverage. Things have changed A LOT since I was covering George W. Bush on the presidential campaign trail in 2000. See what you think....
Your classmate, Colin, has asked about covering the Texas Tribune festival for the first major class assignment. The student fee is $50, but if you are covering the festival for student media, you can apply for a press pass and not pay a fee. Here is a proposal: If you all decided you wanted to do this for the first Major Assignment, I would push back the deadline and assign each of you a specific angle on the festival. You would benefit in your Storify from having the whole class at one event (I'm sure there will be tons of Twitter/social media traffic anyway from this thing) and we could pitch this to Hilltop Views as comprehensive coverage. The whole class doesn't need to sign on though. If one or two of you is interested, let me know and I will send you the link for applying for a press pass and give you each a specific angle/assignment to do so. Again, you would offer this coverage to Hilltop Views for Life&Arts. (One of the Online Editors-in-Chief is in your class, Hannah Thornby). Check out the link and then we can talk about this tomorrow in class. See you then.
Here they are. Please correct anything I've got wrong here. I'll post the final handles when I get confirmation that I've got them all right. Include with that email a vote for either #heathshotties2013 or #seujour for the class hashtag. I am fine with either one. Some of you looked a little uncertain the other day when we voted, so I want to give you one more chance to choose between our feisty one and a more staid one. The majority will win: Reagan - @Reaganomics7 Colin - @LLCoolin Shelby - @JOUR 3322 Kelsey- @kelseyyyann21 Brooke - @brookenblanton Max - @maxlillard Phoenix - @phxj Samantha - @samantharaaee Oliver - @ollmurray1992 Hannah - @hannahthornby Riana - @rianas92 Sara - @sesanchez21 Jena - @profheath
One of your classmates said there was problem with the link, so I am re-sending. Also, someone else asked for details of the blogging assignment. Remember, you are to research Reddit. Get on the site, look around and then find out, from it and other sources, what, if any, remedies the participants in the Tripathi timeline offered to correct their errors. What did they do? Was it enough, in your opinion? Base your blog post on your research (hyperlinking, remember, is attribution in digital journalism)
3. Explore Reddit and do some research on the remedies, if any, proposed by Reddit and others involved in the Sunil Tripahti incident. You will write your first blog post. Slug it: REDDIT POST in the subject line.
All due Wednesday. Have a great Labor Day weekend!
By Friday: Please remember to play around with Storify and be sure you're up and running with your Twitter and Diigo accounts.
By Wednesday 9/4: Read the two articles on the Course Schedule document posted on the class website. One is about the use of Twitter during the Boston Marathon bombing and the other, from the NYTimes Magazine is called: "Should Reddit be Blamed for the Spreading of a Smear?" We'll discuss the issues both these articles raise in class.
Remember: First open HV meeting is Wednesday, 9/4 at 5 p.m. in the Andre Hall lobby. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join us.
From training for multimedia journalism profs this summer. More resources than you will wrap your heads around this semester, but definitely worth a cruise through if you want to do more later.
The photo of the actual iceberg that sunk the Titanic has been artificially colorized so that you see the red gash the Titanic left in the ice. You can't see it in the original BW photo. So, which is more accurate, the original or colorized version? What would be the best way to think about this question?
