As 'the largest city in the world' Mexico City has more than a bit of excitement in sto... - 0 views

  • With 25 million inhabitants, Mexico City is the largest city in the world; it's therefore no surprise that it has so much to offer - from intriguing modern attractions to a variety of ancient cultural wonders. The roots of Mexico's capital lie in its historic centre, which is home to a number of museums, galleries and landmarks; visitors can also experience various religious festivities, cultural events and the 'spirit' of the city by spending time wandering through its centre. Some of Mexico City's top attractions include the National Museum of Anthropology, the Templo Mayor and the Catedral Metropolitana, which now dominates the city's main square, the Zacolo. What's more, Mexico City offers an exquisite opportunity for children to partake in its cultural splendour. The Papalote Children's Museum, for example, holds an array of treasures and is one of the most visited scientific museums in the world.
  • If you're looking for excitement, culture, and perhaps the best margaritas you've ever had, head to Mexico City.

Why Did All Dinosaurs Become Extinct? | Scholastic.com - 0 views

  • Adapted from Dinosaurs: The Very Latest Information and Hands-On Activities From the Museum of the Rockies, by Liza Charlesworth and Bonnie Sachatello-Sawyer. A Scholastic Professional Book. The last dinosaurs died approximately 65 million years ago. Although the cause of their extinction is still a mystery, climatic change, diseases, changing plant communities, and geologic events could all have played a role. Lately, dinosaur extinction theories have been the subject of much debate and controversy. A recent explanation, supported by many scientists, suggests that dinosaurs died out soon after a huge meteorite crashed to Earth near the Gulf of Mexico. A giant meteorite, they reason, could have landed with an impact that kicked up enough dust and debris to block out sunlight for a long time — leading to a deadly chain of events. Without the sun, all the plants died; without the plants, all the plant-eaters died; and without the plant-eaters, all the meat-eaters died. Sounds reasonable. But there is one problem with this theory: Paleontologists have not yet been able to find dinosaur skeletons in rocks dating to the period of impact. Some evidence even seems to indicate that all the dinosaurs had died before the meteorite hit. What is the answer? As paleontologists search for clues to support their theories, they agree to disagree.

Student Research Center - powered by EBSCOhost: WHICH FIRST THANKSGIVING? - 0 views

  • All of these thanksgiving celebrations happened before the Pilgrims had their feast: APRIL 3, 15 13 Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon celebrated a day of thanks when he landed in what is now Florida. SEPTEMBER 8, 1565 Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles held a thanksgiving service when he founded St. Augustine in Florida. APRIL 20, 1598 The group of Spaniards led by Don Juan de Oñate gave thanks. They had survived a 350-mile trip from Mexico to a spot near what is now El Paso, Texas. With the Pueblo people, they feasted on roasted geese, ducks, and fish, along with local vegetables and cactus fruit. DECEMBER 4, l619 A group of Virginia settlers is said to have held their colony's first thanksgiving service. They gave thanks for their safe arrival in Virginia.

Cactus Goo Makes Water Safe: Discovery News - 0 views

  • Other ongoing research by Alcantar's team has shown that the mucilage can also kill bacteria in the water, solving another potential water quality problem.
  • The mucilage either engulfs the bacteria and starves them, or it binds to the bacteria and causes them to settle out of the water.
  • Mucilage consists of carbohydrates and sugars.
