Last week I decided to challenge Scala's downscalability by trying to replace a Groovy script with a Scala pendant. In this article you will read about this little experiment and a comparision of the Scala result with the Groovy predecessor. But first some background about the script: Some time ago my company introduced a new spam notification system.  When it thinks that a mail contains spam, it keeps it in quarantine and once or twice a day sends an email to the recipient (me) reporting all the kept mails, together with an intranet web link for each  to release it. Here you see an example of such a mail (note: I have my mails displayed in plain text format):

Teiid is a data virtualization system that allows applications to use data from multiple, heterogenous data stores. Teiid is comprised of tools, components and services for creating and executing bi-directional data services.  Through abstraction and federation, data is accessed and integrated in real-time across distributed data sources without copying or otherwise moving data from its system of record. 

A set of functions and predicates (as defined by Google Collections / Guava libraries) along with a set of utility methods to help navigating and editing Eclipse EMF models. EMFPath depends on Google Guava. Guava is available as OSGi bundles from the guava-bundle project.

Eclipse provides a modeling infrastructure evolving around the Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF) for which offering graphical representations and editing possibilities is essential. Graphiti is an Eclipse-based graphics framework that enables easy development of state-of-the-art diagram editors for domain models.

So I started with a maven web application in Eclipse to do my test drive of jersey. I added the repositories, and the jersey-server dependency (https://jersey.dev.java.net/source/browse/*checkout*/jersey/tags/jersey-1.0.2/jersey/dependencies.html) I started out with a filter, instead of the servlet. I always prefer filters. I also added the following initialization parameters:

Akka is the platform for the next generation event-driven, scalable and fault-tolerant architectures on the JVM We believe that writing correct concurrent, fault-tolerant and scalable applications is too hard. Most of the time it's because we are using the wrong tools and the wrong level of abstraction. Akka is here to change that. Using the Actor Model together with Software Transactional Memory we raise the abstraction level and provide a better platform to build correct concurrent and scalable applications. Modeling is supposed to be one of the most important activities in any software development process. At least this is the general understanding within the software engineering research community. However, in the day-to-day practice, modeling is usually regarded as, basically, a waste of time.
