"Besides a rich user interaction many applications need to display a big amount of data sets as diagrams or reports as part of their applications. In order to bridge the gap the BIRT project was created as part of the eclipse ecosystem. BIRT is an open source Eclipse-based reporting system that integrates with your Java/J2EE application to produce compelling reports. That BIRT integrates well with classic RCP applications is a well known fact. But the need for rich internet applications is still growing. And here the RAP comes into play. As a platform for developing Web 2.0 applications with the same patterns as for RCP it paves the way for single sourcing applications running on both platforms. In this talk we will show how to integrate diagrams and reports known from BIRT into RAP applications. Topics covered include how to setup the environment to let BIRT and RAP play well together. This page contains the latest compiled builds of Pentaho Data Integration (Kettle) community edition.  The builds are based on source code downloaded daily from SVN. Why download these snapshot builds? You want the latest version - to get the latest features in PDI. You want a more stable version - PDI point releases (e.g. 4.0.1) can include important bug fixes - see the PDI JIRA system for a full list of known issues. You need a bug fixed - You're struggling with a critical bug which has been fixed in a more recent version. To save time - You haven't got the time and/or inclination to learn about how to download PDI from SVN and build your own version.

Apache ServiceMix is an open source ESB (Enterprise Service Bus) that combines the functionality of a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and an Event Driven Architecture (EDA)  to create an agile, enterprise ESB. Apache ServiceMix is an open source distributed ESB built from the ground up on the  Java Business Integration (JBI) specification JSR 208 and released under the Apache license. The goal of JBI is to allow components and services to be integrated in a vendor independent way, allowing users and vendors to plug and play.

Papyrus is aiming at providing an integrated and user-consumable environment for editing any kind of EMF model and particularly supporting UML and related modeling languages such as SysML and MARTE. Papyrus provides diagram editors for EMF-based modeling languages amongst them UML 2 and SysML and the glue required for integrating these editors (GMF-based or not) with other MBD and MDSD tools. Papyrus also offers a very advanced support of UML profiles that enables users to define editors for DSLs based on the UML 2 standard. The main feature of Papyrus regarding this latter point is a set of very powerful customization mechanisms which can be leveraged to create user-defined Papyrus perspectives and give it the same look and feel as a "pure" DSL editor.

UNICASE is a CASE-Tool integrating models from the different development acitivities, such as requirements, use cases, UML models, schedules, bug and feature models into a unified model. This unified model is highly traceable by design. The UNICASE client allows to view and edit these models in a textual, tabular and diagram visualization. The models are stored and versioned on a server comparable to svn but customized for models. Client and server are easily extensible to support integrating new models into the unified model. UNICASE is based on the Eclipse platform including EMF and GMF. It can also be used as a framework to build modeling applications that reuse its repository and visualization capabilities. The project is open-source and released under the Eclipse Public License v 1.0 (EPL). It builds on our experience from the Sysiphus project in building a CASE tool.

Mod4j (Modeling for Java) is an open source DSL-based environment for developing administrative enterprise applications. It uses a collection of DSL's to model different parts of the architecture, combined with manually written code. Currently Mod4j consists of four DSLs: the Business Domain DSL, Service DSL, Data Contract DSL and Presentation DSL. The modeling environment is seamlessly integrated into the Eclipse IDE which gives the developers one environment where they can easily switch back- and forth between models and code. The different DSL?s used in Mod4j can be used independently, but if they are used in collaboration they will be fully validated with each other. Apart from integration in the Eclipse IDE, Mod4j also supports the use of Maven. That is, using the DSL models as the source, the complete code generation process can be run automatically on a build server without the need for Eclipse. The Mod4j DSLs and the corresponding code generators are based on a reference architecture. This allows developers to model various aspects of the application and generate code that strictly follows this reference architecture. The reference architecture is described in a separate document. For a good understanding of the generated code it is useful to read this document.

Spring Security is a powerful and highly customizable authentication and access-control framework. It is the de-facto standard for securing Spring-based applications Spring Security is one of the most mature and widely used Spring projects. Founded in 2003 and actively maintained by SpringSource since, today it is used to secure numerous demanding environments including government agencies, military applications and central banks. It is released under an Apache 2.0 license so you can confidently use it in your projects. Spring Security is also easy to learn, deploy and manage. Our dedicated security namespace provides directives for most common operations, allowing complete application security in just a few lines of XML. We also offer complete tooling integration in SpringSource Tool Suite, plus our Spring Roo rapid application development framework. The Spring Community Forum and SpringSource offer a variety of free and paid support services. Spring Security is also integrated with many other Spring technologies, including Spring Web Flow, Spring Web Services, SpringSource Enterprise, SpringSource Application Management Suite and SpringSource tc Server.

"The Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC) is an open (creative commons) REST based service specification aimed at improving/simplifying Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) system integration. A number of aspects of ALM integration are covered by OSLC ranging from Requirements Management to Automation(Build/Deploy). The OSLC Change Management (CM) spec outlines a standard for creating, modifying, and querying for change requests (tasks) from OSLC based service providers. A goal of the Mylyn project is to implement a client for OSLC-CM (see [1]). Setting up an infrastructure for Instant Messaging" article series. In my previous tutorials, I showed you how to setup the Openfire IM Server and how to configure the Spark client in order to connect to that server. In this tutorial, I will show you how to add XMPP messaging capabilities to your own application. I will use the Smack library, an Open Source XMPP (Jabber) client library for instant messaging and presence. Smack is a pure Java library and can be embedded into your applications to create anything from a full XMPP client to simple XMPP integrations.

Hibernate Tutorial. In this hibernate tutorial, we will learn basics of hibernate, inheritance mapping, collection mapping, component mapping, HQL, HCQL, Named Query, Caching and Integration of Hibernate with other frameworks.

I am working on a web site that will help students practice their Scala programming skills. As I labored along, writing my JSF app code, I thought "this is silly-why not practice Scala at the same time?" But I like JSF and wasn't ready to jump to Lift or Vaadin. With Eclipse, this isn't all that hard. Install the Java plugin. Make a dynamic web project in the usual way, using the Java EE perspective. Then, switch to the Scala perspective, right-click on the project, and, if all planets are aligned correctly, you will get a menu item "Add Scala nature". (If they are not, see here for a manual approach.) Add your managed beans as Scala classes. Finally, switch back to the Java EE perspective, select the project properties, and add the Scala library JAR as a Java EE module dependency. But I like NetBeans and wasn't ready to switch to Eclipse. (Unfortunately, JSF 2 support in Eclipse is pretty minimal, the Glassfish integration is a bit flaky, and the Scala plugin has very little usable code completion.) NetBeans doesn't let me add a "Scala nature" to a web project. If I add Scala files to the project, I can edit them with the Scala editor, but they just get copied to the WAR file, without any compilation. I had one look at the Ant scripts for a Scala and a web project and decided that I wasn't going to figure out how to merge them. This blog shows how you can use Maven to make a mixed Scala/Java project in NetBeans. So I gathered up JSF and Scala pom.xml files from here and here, cut out the considerable crud from the JSF POM file that was probably meant for supporting Tomcat, and merged the results to the best of my ability-see below.
