"MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your console (with ncurses). It can also monitor wildcards: if another file matching the wildcard has a more recent modification date, it will automatically switch to that file. That way you can, for example, monitor a complete directory of files. Merging of 2 or even more logfiles is possible. It can also use colors while displaying the logfiles (through regular expressions), for faster recognition of what is important and what not. It can also filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software. When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the functionality of tools like 'watch' and such."

Vaadin is a Rapid Application Development (RAD) framework for RIA applications. I only know it for a few months but since I started experimenting with it, I'm really in favor of it. I see a lot of advantages compared to Sun's Java EE standard front-end framework JSF. First of all Vaadin is a java library, so you only have to write Java to build a complete frontend. No need for a specific frontend language, no need for converters (for comboboxes),… This also implies that you can use the full Java power on the frontend side and that's an huge advantage because frontend code is now type-safe and easily refactorable. You can unit test your frontend with JUnit. You can also use all existing java libraries on the frontend side, for example LOG4J. Another advantage is the fact that Vaadin is easy to learn (JSF isn't!) and to use: it's straigtforward. It feels like developing desktop apps and for me developing desktop apps feels much more intuitive than developing web-apps the way I'm used to. Vaadin uses convention over configuration. No need to register new components, validators or whatever in different xml files. Themes have a default folder and a default folder structure. Vaadin is very well documented. There's the book of Vaadin wich explains every aspect of the framework very clear. On the site there's a blog, a FAQ section, a wiki, a forum, examples with Java source code, … It's very easy to extend. Want to create your own Validator? Just implement an interface or extend another Validator and use it. Want to create your own custom server side component? Just extend the CustomComponent class or extend from another component. There's also an add-on directory where you can download UI components, data components, tools, themes, …

"The past year I've been learning a lot of Scala and I'm currently working on a new project using Scala. I use LiquiBase, which is a database-independent library for tracking, managing and applying database changes. I'm also using the simple-build-tool (SBT) for my project. So I've put together a little SBT plug-in for running LiquiBase maintenance commands (update, rollback, …) from within SBT. For example, whenever I want to apply new database changes with LiquiBase I can now simply run sbt liquibase-update which sets up a new instance of LiquiBase and executes the LiquiBase update command which migrates my database to the latest version. At the moment the plug-in supports the following commands: liquibase-update, liquibase-drop, liquibase-tag, liquibase-rollback and liquibase-validate. What are the benefits of using the plug-in and not just the LiquiBase CLI? * no download/install of LiquiBase * classpath handled by SBT * no need to provide a big list of parameters or writing shell scripts The plug-in is called liquibase-sbt-plugin and you can find it here on GitHub. Feel free to use it or fork it and suggest changes. I'm still relatively new to Scala and especially SBT so any remarks are very welcome."

Last weekend while pondering the question "Is Scala ready for the enterprise?" I decided to write a simple Java EE 6 app entirely in Scala, without using any Java. I had three main reasons for doing this: one was just to see how easy/difficult it would be to write everything in Scala (it was easy).  Another was to document the process for others journeying down the same road (the entire project is on github).  Finally, I wanted to identify advantages of using Scala instead of Java that are specific to Java EE apps (I found several). Background The specific app I created was an adaptation of the Books example from Chapter 10 of Beginning Java™ EE 6 Platform with GlassFish™ 3. It's a simple web app that displays a list of books in a database and lets you add new books. Although it's a pretty trivial app, it does touch on several important Java EE 6 technologies: JPA 2.0, EJB 3.1 and JSF 2.0.

"A lot of people have asked me to document the reasons I want to migrate Hibernate from Maven to Gradle as its build tool so I enumerate those reasons here. If you are completely new to Gradle, I suggest having a look at their overview page. Up front I want to point out that this is not intended as a "Maven bash session" nor as a means to directly compare Maven and Gradle. It is just a means to describe the issues and frustrations I have seen in my 2.5+ years of using Maven for Hibernate builds; in many cases the cause is simply an assumption or concept in Maven itself which did not line up cleanly with how I wanted to do build stuff in Hibernate. Some of the list aggregated by Paul comes directly from Hibernate use-cases; I'd suggest reading through those as well. It is also a means to describe why I decided on Gradle as opposed to other related build tools out there now (Buildr, SBT, etc). Note that there is a comparison wiki between Gradle and Maven, but that it is quite old and out of date in many respects especially in regards to Gradle. Apache Axis is an implementation of the SOAP ("Simple Object Access Protocol") submission to W3C. From the draft W3C specification: SOAP is a lightweight protocol for exchanging structured information in a decentralized, distributed environment. It is an XML based protocol that consists of three parts: an envelope that defines a framework for describing what is in a message and how to process it, a set of encoding rules for expressing instances of application-defined datatypes, and a convention for representing remote procedure calls and responses. This project is a follow-on to the Apache SOAP project. Please see the Reference Library for a list of technical resources that should prove useful.

There are many approaches available to scale PostgreSQL beyond running on a single server. An outline of the terminology and basic technologies involved is at High Availability and Load Balancing. There is a presentation covering some of these solutions. There is no one-size fits all replication software. You have to understand your requirements and how various approaches fit into that. For example, here are two extremes in the replication problem space: You have a few servers connected to a local network you want to always keep current for failover and load-balancing purposes. Here you would be considering solutions that are synchronous, eager, and therefore conflict-free. Your users take a local copy of the database with them on laptops when they leave the office, make changes while they are away, and need to merge those with the main database when they return. Here you'd want an asynchronous, lazy replication approach, and will be forced to consider how to handle conflicts in cases where the same record has been modified both on the master server and on a local copy. These are both database replication problems, but the best way to solve them is very different. And as you can see from these examples, replication has a lot of specific terminology that you'll have to understand to figure out what class of solution makes sense for your requirements. A great source for this background is in the Postgres-R Terms and Definitions for Database Replication. The main theoretical topic it doesn't mention is how to resolve conflict resolution in lazy replication cases like the laptop situation, which involves voting and similar schemes.

Papyrus is aiming at providing an integrated and user-consumable environment for editing any kind of EMF model and particularly supporting UML and related modeling languages such as SysML and MARTE. Papyrus provides diagram editors for EMF-based modeling languages amongst them UML 2 and SysML and the glue required for integrating these editors (GMF-based or not) with other MBD and MDSD tools. Papyrus also offers a very advanced support of UML profiles that enables users to define editors for DSLs based on the UML 2 standard. The main feature of Papyrus regarding this latter point is a set of very powerful customization mechanisms which can be leveraged to create user-defined Papyrus perspectives and give it the same look and feel as a "pure" DSL editor.

"Besides a rich user interaction many applications need to display a big amount of data sets as diagrams or reports as part of their applications. In order to bridge the gap the BIRT project was created as part of the eclipse ecosystem. BIRT is an open source Eclipse-based reporting system that integrates with your Java/J2EE application to produce compelling reports. That BIRT integrates well with classic RCP applications is a well known fact. But the need for rich internet applications is still growing. And here the RAP comes into play. As a platform for developing Web 2.0 applications with the same patterns as for RCP it paves the way for single sourcing applications running on both platforms. In this talk we will show how to integrate diagrams and reports known from BIRT into RAP applications. Topics covered include how to setup the environment to let BIRT and RAP play well together. In addition we will give advices how to use the reports inside RAP applications and which problems may arise. As a final outcome of we will know everything to bring reporting capabilities into RAP applications. "

The release 3.0 of Spring Framework added the Spring Module OXM which supports the marshalling and unmarshalling of Java objects and XML documents.In this post, we will be using Spring OXM to take a Java object, convert it to a XML-format and save it in the hard-disk as an XML file containing information of that Java object. We will also cover how to retrieve back the serialized state of that XML file and reconstruct it back to it's original state as a Java object.

Remus Information Management. It is a free OpenSource client application for the management of information with a connection to multitude of data repositories and a desktop-integration for an optimal usage for the offline management, visualization and easy accessibility of information to the user. The biggest efforts are the linking of information throughout different repositories, the offline storage, the clean representation and the fast search through the information.

Provide mechanisms for integrating Java security providers into Eclipse: Applications that need to implement security related functionality require cryptographic services upon which to build. Java provides the Java Cryptography Architecture (JCA) as a mechanism for installing implementations of several interfaces used for cryptography, including MessageDigest, Signature, KeyStore, Certstore, and more. In a typical Java application, these implementations reside in the extensions directory of the JRE. In a dynamic Eclipse application, the appropriate packaging mechanism is in Eclipse plug-ins. The goal is to allow JCA to be used in an Eclipse environment while maintaining the programming model of the JCA subsystem. A related goal is to expose the configuration of the JCA system via an Eclipse-based user interface, allowing authorized users to inspect and modify the Security object.

"At this point, the only source of useful overview documentation for the Common Navigator are the excellent tutorials at Michael Elder's (the author of the CN) blog. Soon I hope to get some of this transferred into the Eclipse Plugin Developer's Guide. RCP applications can quickly and easily use the CN to show the resources in the workspace. This assumes that your RCP application uses resources (which is another discussion). The CN can also be used for non-resource RCP applications, in that case, these instructions don't apply, as the objects treated by the CN have to be created directly by the RCP application. If you are planning to use the CN in an RCP application that uses resources, there are 3 (2 of which are completely undocumented) things you must do:"

"Blueprint provides a dependency injection framework for OSGi and was standardized by the OSGi Alliance in OSGi Compendium R4.2. It is designed to deal with the dynamic nature of OSGi, where services can become available and unavailable at any time. The specification is also designed to work with plain old Java objects (POJOs) enabling simple components to be written and unit tested in a JSE environment without needing to be aware of how they are assembled. The Blueprint XML files that define and describe the assembly of various components are key to the Blueprint programming model. The specification describes how the components get instantiated and wired together to form a running module. The following documentation covers the 80:20 usage of Blueprint.
