Assassination Deepens Divide in Pakistan - 0 views

Thousands of mourners thronged to the funeral in Lahore of the governor, Salman Taseer, a prominent voice for secularism who had recently become the focus of religious fury for speaking out against the nation's strict blasphemy laws. Many of the nation's top politicians, including Mr. Taseer's chief rival in Punjab and the leader of the opposition, Nawaz Sharif, did not attend the services. Neither did President Asif Ali Zardari, a friend and ally of Mr. Taseer, but out concern for his own security. Government ministers and party officials indicated that they were dropping the campaign to change the blasphemy laws that Mr. Taseer had championed. No senior official would be drawn to comment on the religious extremist aspect of the killing at the funeral. Those who did comment, indicated a shift in the government position, by suggesting the killing was a political murder and a conspiracy, rather than a religiously motivated attack. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureishi avoided all comment and merely expressed his condolences to the family when approached by journalists. The Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, went as far as to say he would shoot any blasphemer himself.

The man who surrendered at the Baja Fresh restaurant is not the federal fugitive that U.S. marshals thought they might have spotted earlier outside the Chandler Fashion Center, said Chandler Police Sgt. Joe Favazzo.

"This bridge has always been safe, but it really was starting to show its age," said Frank G. McCartney, executive director of the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, which paid for the $8 million project through tolls at some of its other Delaware River crossings. "There was so much corrosion that it looked like rust was the bridge's official color."

A Bonanza in TV Sales Fades Away - 0 views

Most Americans have taken the leap and tossed out their old boxy televisions in favor of sleek flat-panel displays. After a period of strong growth, sales of televisions are slowing. To counter this, TV makers are trying to persuade consumers to buy new sets by promoting new technologies. At this week's Consumer Electronics Show, which opens Thursday, every TV maker will be crowing about things like 3-D and Internet connections - features that have not generated much excitement so far.

Jets appealing $100K fine - 0 views

  •
The New York Jets are appealing the $100,000 fine handed down by the NFL last week for the Sal Alosi tripping incident, a team spokesman said Wednesday. The NFL fined the Jets last Thursday for violating league rules when Alosi, a strength and conditioning coach, tripped Miami's Nolan Carroll on the sideline during a punt return in the Jets-Dolphins game on Dec. 12. The league said Alosi instructed inactive players to stand in a wall in a prohibited area on the sideline to deter opposing teams' players during special-teams plays, which is a violation of NFL policy. Alosi was suspended until the end of the season by the Jets for the trip. Jets spokesman Bruce Speight said Wednesday that the team's appeal was a "typical course of action" and added that any further conversations about the appeals process will remain between the team and the NFL.
