TEXAS -- The newspaper adviser at Big Spring High School resigned May 28 after the principal pulled the last issue of the paper, which included an editorial advocating the legalization of marijuana. Steven Saldivar, superintendent of the Big Spring Independent School District, said the editorial conflicted with the district's policy of discouraging illegal drug use. Frank LoMonte, executive director of the Student Press Law Center, said that courts have ruled that the First Amendment protects political speech even in schools. "A political opinion urging a change in the law is absolutely the highest and most protected First Amendment speech," he said

PENNSYLVANIA -- The 3rd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Pennsylvania ordered on Friday that the conflicting rulings in two student online speech cases be vacated and heard by the full court in June. This order nullifies the previous decisions, which were each made by panels of three judges each, and will replace them with decisions made by the entire panel of 3rd Circuit judges, after a hearing on June 3. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) represented the students in both cases, which were both ruled on Feb. 4. In the case Layshock v. Hermitage School District, a three-judge panel ruled in favor of high school student Justin Layshock on his First Amendment claim

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Though Minnesota state lawmakers appear likely to insist that a roof be part of any public deal for a new Vikings stadium, the team is sticking with its offer to pay about a third of the bill -- minus whatever a roof would cost. Vikings vice president and stadium point man Lester Bagley said in an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday that the Vikings would prefer an outdoor stadium, but understood that might not win legislative approval when lawmakers in February take up the team's request for a stadium funded in part by taxpayers.

Apple on Thursday announced that its Mac App Store will open for business on Jan. 6. In a company press release, Apple said the new store would "be available in 90 countries at launch and will feature paid and free apps in categories like Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities." Steven P. Jobs, Apple's chief executive, said he hoped to have the same impact with the distribution and creation of applications designed for a personal computer as Apple has had with mobile apps for the iPhone. The new Mac App Store is expected to cause some strife for larger software companies, including Adobe and Microsoft, that will have to battle a new wave of app developers that can sell software through the new store, bypassing expensive traditional software distribution.
