Throwback Thursday: Student-Cellphone-Search Lawsuit Still Resonates - Digital Educatio... - 0 views

  •
"The suit was eventually settled out of court, but the issue hasn't gone away, said Courtney Bowie, a senior staff attorney with the Racial Justice Program of the New York City-based civil-liberties advocacy group. "At the time, the case law wasn't quite as clear as it is today as to whether it is permissible for a school district to search the entire contents of a student's cell phone," Bowie said an in an interview. "In 2010, smartphones that could basically hold all the power and information of a computer were still a new thing, and [this issue] hadn't really been fleshed out in the courts yet." "

Shakespeare's still significant and relevant - 0 views

    • Kate K

This article is interesting because it connects Shakespeare to a more modern day t.v. show. This article has proximity because it pertains to students at our school, and it has conflict because it discusses differing opinions.
  • The list goes on and on, “for goodness sake” – oh, that’s one too! And it’s not just his words that hold their own in our society; his themes are timeless too. You may complain…these stories are outdated and no longer relevant. On the contrary, there are hundreds, maybe even thousands of Shakespearean remakes and references contained in contemporary culture. From books to movies to New Yorker comics, our world is bursting with them. Ever heard of West Side Story, or a childhood favorite The Lion King, or maybe Taylor Swift’s “Love Story”? They’re all based on Shakespearean plays! Face it, old Shakes made such a lasting impression on the world that even Ke$ha is referencing him.
  • Shakespeare concocted roughly 1,500 words/phrases of the English language that are commonplace today. Who’s not familiar with “gloomy”, “in a pickle”, “breaking the ice”, “watchdog”, or “heart of gold”?
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Reading his works, you may have noticed something rather odd about the way he writes. And no, I’m not referring to the combination of prose and verse. Shakespeare encompasses a linguistic technique called functional shift – using words that take on a new syntactic meaning.

This article is important because it highlights the importance of an author who has been in the decline because our current era does not appreciate Shakespeare. This article helps bring back the relevance and how he has shaped our era's music, science and English.
  •
Reading Shakespeare is rigorous but rewarding; it is an essential part of our curriculum and every student should be enriched. Although some disagree. They question the relevance and significance of Shakespeare, close-mindedly criticizing his grammar and English, refusing to delve and explore the true meaning of his words. Prepare to be enlightened, Bard-bashers!
  •
ou're ready to vent, so I'll get you started: you say Shakespeare is not English and it's written in a way we no longer speak. I beg to differ; Shakespeare concocted roughly 1,500 words/phrases of the English language that are commonplace today. Who's not familiar with "gloomy", "in a pickle", "breaking the ice", "watchdog", or "heart of gold"?

Cabaret overcomes budget cuts - 0 views

  • Hunterdon Central Regional High School’s annual Cabaret has seen major changes this year due to budget cuts, but did not fall short of amazing people like it has for over the last 3 decades.

I think this is news worthy because it talks about a money loss that effected a huge event at our school. It effected a mass amount of people involved with the show and the students that go to see the show. Prominence- This is a very important part of Central events. Importance and Impact- This effects a majority of the student body. Proximity- This happened at Hunterdon Central Meaning- Helps the students understand why the show is less extravagant that year. Unusual Nature- This hasnt happened in the part most recent years of HCRHS history.

Hunterdon Central Regional High School's annual Cabaret has seen major changes this year due to budget cuts, but did not fall short of amazing people like it has for over the last 3 decades. Due to this year's budget cuts, Hunterdon Central had to make some significant changes to this year's Cabaret. The show saw multiple cuts which included a decrease in the number of acts, two of the directors were cut, and the Cabaret chorus was not seen at all at this years show. This year's Cabaret was directed only by Mr. Magalio which was one of the things that led to the significantly less amount of acts.

Guidance counselor witnesses killer's capture on NYC subway - 0 views

I believe that this story is news worthy because it's not everyday you witness an arrest, none the less of a killer, on a subway. I think this story would catch people's attention because of its unusual nature. You wouldn't really expect to see a story about witnessing a killer in a student run school news paper. Also another quality I think this article holds is proximity, since we are less than an hour away from New York City.
    • Matt Straley

I think this is newsworthy because one of the personnel working at central witnessed a killer get taken down. Its is proximity because occurred so close. Emotion because one of the people we know was near a dangerous person.

This story is newsworthy because it has human interest. The story is about a team that didn't win many games but still kept their spirits up throughout the season. This story invokes emotion within the readers and makes them feel for the team. It also has close proximity to its readers because it is about the South varsity lacrosse team and most of the readers probably go to that high school or live near it.

This story attracted my attention because it is about lacrosse, a sport I used to play. The story kept my attention and was interesting to me because it was uplifting and was about a team that wasn't very good but didn't give up.

This is interesting too me because I deal with it so much in my life as a student. In school, they claim it too not be true. Human Interest-a different view Meaning-answers a lot of questions about wiki
  • Over the past decade, Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, has become an invaluable research tool for me, as well as millions of other users worldwide. But many teachers prohibit the use of Wikipedia for their research projects. Frankly, Wikipedia does not deserve its bad reputation. Its potential for vandalism should not discredit its enormous supply of cited, accurate information. To write it off as an “unreliable source” is an insult to the people who volunteer their time to ensure that it is as accurate as possible

  • PAINT CREEK, Tex. — In the early 1960s, at a tiny, rural school here in the rugged plains of West Texas, little Ricky Perry waged his first campaign. Seeking the office of Halloween King, he stocked up on penny candy at Ma’s convenience store and then doled it out to classmates.

This is newsworthy because it contains proximity (the town football team) and Special interest (sports fans). I think this news is important because their are a lot of sports fan out there and interested to know how the high school football team is doing.
  • Searfoss drilled a punt from his own 46 with just under six minutes left that positioned Linden on its own 8-yard line and the Hunterdon Central defense held it down the rest of the way to nail down a 27-14 victory yesterday in Linden.

New Facebook Feature: A Subscription to Friends' Feeds - NYTimes.com - 1 views

  • If you use Facebook, I’m sure you have been faced with this problem: Someone you meet once requests to be your “friend” on the service, even though you aren’t really “friends.”To help manage this problem, Facebook on Wednesday introduced a “subscription button,” which allows people to subscribe to parts of your news feed without having to become your Facebook friend. The new feature feels very similar to the follow button on Twitter, where you choose to follow someone’s feed.
