Gelman, a 23-year-old Ukrainian immigrant, had been the target of a massive police manhunt for murdering four people in the twenty-eight hours before his arrest.

New York City labor unions are preparing to back the unwieldy grassroots band occupying a park in Lower Manhattan, in a move that could mark a significant shift in the tenor of the anti-corporate Occupy Wall Street protests and send thousands more people into the streets. The Transit Workers Union Local 100's executive committee, which oversees the organization of subway and bus workers, voted unanimously Wednesday night to support the protesters. The union claims 38,000 members. A union-backed organizing coalition, which orchestrated a large May 12 march on Wall Street before the protests, is planning a rally on Oct. 5 in explicit support. And SEIU 32BJ, which represents doormen, security guards and maintenance workers, is using its Oct. 12 rally to express solidarity with the Zuccotti Park protesters.

ABC News' Greg Krieg reports from New York City: City officials said early this morning they will postpone a cleanup of Zuccotti Park after earlier threatening to evict Occupy Wall Street protesters who have been encamped here.

"After days of intensifying pressure from runners, politicians and the general public to cancel the New York City Marathon in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, city officials and the event's organizers decided Friday afternoon to cancel the race."

Nearby, in an old construction site, a truck trailer is lined with enough discarded furniture that it looks like a makeshift bedroom.

NEW YORK (AP) - Central Park could lose 1,000 trees due to the unprecedented weekend snowstorm, the group that manages the park said Monday. The storm harmed about 400 acres - half of the park, primarily its southern end, below 86th Street, said Central Park Conservancy spokeswoman Dena Libner. "The damage is so broad and so devastating, so much worse than Irene," she said.
