Follow the Odor and CO2: Flight Patterns Reveal How Mosquitoes Find Hosts to Transmit Deadly Diseases ScienceDaily (Oct. 5, 2011) - The carbon dioxide we exhale and the odors our skins emanate serve as crucial cues to female mosquitoes on the hunt for human hosts to bite and spread diseases such as malaria, dengue and yellow fever. Two entomologists at the University of California, Riverside have now performed experiments to study how female Aedes aegypti -- mosquitoes that transmit yellow fever and dengue -- respond to plumes of carbon dioxide and human odor.

With 7 billion on earth, a huge task before us - CNN.com - 0 views

  •
With 7 billion on earth, a huge task before us (CNN) -- Just 12 years after the arrival of the 6 billionth individual on the planet in 1999, humanity will greet the 7 billionth arrival this month. The world population continues its rapid ascent, with roughly 75 million more births than deaths each year. The consequences of a world crowded with 7 billion people are enormous. And unless the world population stabilizes during the 21st century, the consequences for humanity could be grim.

I see this story as being newsworthy because for a bit it seemed as space exploration for the United States had come to a halt after the last shuttle, Atlantis, took off in early July 2011.
    • Emily M

As I see it, this article has a certain importance and impact to the U.S. Although it will take some time for this new rocket to be released, it still gives us a horizon to look towards in the topic of space exploration.

The Student Press Law Center voiced concern Monday that the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling denying the First Amendment claims of a high school blogger is a setback for the rights of student journalists everywhere. The New York appeals court ruled 3-0 that school administrators did not violate "clearly established" First Amendment precedent, either when they disciplined Avery Doninger for her off-campus blog or when they punished her and her classmates for wearing "Team Avery" T-shirts at a school "The ruling is worrisome in several respects. What Avery Doninger was doing was not terribly different from what an editorial commentator might do - trying to arouse the public to call and email the school to express an opinion about a disputed policy decision. It's troubling that the Second Circuit is willing to entertain the possibility that inciting citizens to contact their public officials is unprotected by the First Amendment if the issue is so controversial that people feel strongly about it, which is the takeaway from this decision," LoMonte said. "The circuit has indicated, in essence, that it's safe for students to engage in discussion about issues that nobody cares about, but if the issues raise strong emotions, then the students' involvement might be considered 'disruptive.'"  "It's clear that the federal courts have abdicated their responsibility to protect the basic human rights of vulnerable young people, and so young people are going to have to organize and mobilize like never before to petition their legislators and members of Congress for better statutory protection," LoMonte said. "This ruling is a wake-up call to every student in America that their rights are in peril and that they cannot depend on the federal courts to police even the clearest disciplinary overreactions."

Hairsplitting over bid to fight spill? | Philadelphia Inquirer | 05/26/2010 - 0 views

  •
A few weeks ago, a tiny San Francisco nonprofit started a national goodwill juggernaut. The group, A Matter of Trust, put out a call for human hair and sheared animal fur for use in biodegradable booms to soak up oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico. On May 15, a representative from the company's department of Critical Resources Materials Management called to say BP was interested, Gautier said. But then, a few days later, BP said publicly that it was not working with A Matter of Trust. And the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is assisting with the spill containment and cleanup, issued a statement saying that the hair booms were not effective and that volunteers should stop donating the materials.

Cellphone Service on Subway Platforms, but No More Excuses - NYTimes.com - 2 views

  •
Perhaps no space in New York City is governed by as complex a set of social rules as the cramped subway car, that lurching human Petri dish that has spawned a thousand sociology papers. Its nuanced etiquette is known to generations of New Yorkers: head down, body clenched, contact of eyes or limbs a no-no.

MLB Playoffs 2011: Why the Texas Rangers Would Rather Face the New York Yankees | Bleac... - 0 views

  •
The Texas Rangers, despite some knee-jerk reactions following their Game 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, were able to stave off the Rays in convincing fashion in Game 4 by winning their second consecutive game by the score of 4-3. To be honest, I feel that no matter whom they take on in the American League Championship Series this weekend, they should be able to defeat them. But anytime there is more than one option, it's human nature to speculate as to which provides the best perk. The New York Yankees are the team I'd rather face if I'm the Texas Rangers. This decision will certainly be seen as obtuse by some. Seriously, man? The Texas Rangers are hitting .238 against the Yankees, and .231 at Yankees Stadium with only two home runs. Yeah, and the Yankees' new-ish home is a launching pad for many other teams. And the Texas Rangers hit much better against the Detroit Tigers (.269 to be exact.)

A Setback Could Force NASA to Bid for a Plan B - NYTimes.com - 0 views

I thought this news was important because it's world news and NASA affects many people. It has Human/Interest Emotion, Timeliness, and Conflict. The reason being why it is Human/Interest Emotion is because it affects a certain group of people (people who are interested in science and space). It is Timeless because it happened recently. It is a Conflict because they are delaying something because something went wrong.

The announcement on Tuesday by the Russian space agency that it will delay the launching of the next crew to the International Space Station is a concern for NASA, which is relying solely on the Russians for astronaut transportation.

I think this is news worthy because it has to do with many peoples mutual feeling. It has the human interest quality because it speaks about under privileged kids.
  • Central sucks. I can care less about my classes. There’s no point to school. It’s a waste of my time. Throughout my four years at Central, I have heard these words countless times, resonating with anger and defiance in the hallways. Despite the handful of students who go to class each day with a smile and desire to learn, the overwhelming response is clear: students find little value in the education they receive each day.

This article was newsworthy cause it was directly relating to high school students, and even more specifically, Central students. The qualities it contained were Importance and Impact, being that this relates so directly all high school kids. Human interest/emotion, because of the heart warming ending and the story about the little Honduran girl. Proximity, because it was written by a student who goes to Hunterdon Central. And finally meaning, because it let us know exactly how important school is, and w3hat kind of attitude we should show towards it.
  •
Although I thoroughly enjoyed everything I was doing, my education served no purpose other than meeting the standards of the 'system.' Soon enough, I yearned for a deeper meaning, a more useful application to what I was learning.

This story is newsworthy because it affects all of America and it has a deeper meaning. It qualifies as human interest and importance. It is important to all Americans to mindfull of their money but it is of human interest because it touches people. It asks them to be humbled by it and to appreciate what they have.
