If the noise level is acceptable a happy smiling contented graphic is displayed. If the levels of noise increase beyond what the responsible adult has determined as acceptable the graphic changes to reflect the unacceptable noise level. The Autism Help App assists individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and other disabilities to communicate in emergency situations. Utilizing the 5 Point Scale, individuals can easily communicate their level of anxiety and needs in a high stress situation without the need to be verbal. Autism Help levels are color-coded with different facial expressions. Each level of the emergency increases as the numbers get higher. For example, choosing a “1” may mean that “I have a scratch on my leg and need a band-aid.” Choosing a “3” may mean “I have a headache and need to use my relaxation exercises.” Choosing a “5” may mean “I’m lost and can’t find my parents! I need a policeman.” Autism Help can be customized to fit an individual’s needs. Levels of “emergencies”, photos and responses can be individualized for each family

The app opens up to a “I need a break screen” that vocalizes “I need a break” when it is tapped. The screen then transitions to a red screen with an angry face and the number ten. With each tap the screen transitions to a calmer face and color. In this way, the app prompts the user to count backwards from ten followed by a deep breath. The app also includes a simple social story with line drawings about anger. The social story talks about feeling angry and things you can do, like counting to ten, breathing deeply and taking a break, to calm yourself down. The settings screen allows you to choose from male, female or no vocals for counting back from ten and for reading the social story out loud.
