Caveon Uses Technology Against Cheaters - NYTimes.com - 2 views

  •
Mississippi had a problem born of the age of soaring student testing and digital technology. High school students taking the state's end-of-year exams were using cellphones to text one another the answers. Enlarge This Image Drew Angerer/The New York Times John Fremer, 71, a Caveon co-founder who was once the chief test developer for the SAT. CHEAT SHEET A High-Tech Approach Articles in this series examine cheating in education and efforts to stop it. Readers' Comments Readers shared their thoughts on this article. Read All Comments (77) » With more than 100,000 students tested, proctors could not watch everyone - not when some teenagers can text with their phones in their pockets. So the state called in a company that turns technology against the cheats: it analyzes answer sheets by computer and flags those with so many of the same questions wrong or right that the chances of random agreement are astronomically small. Copying is the almost certain explanation.

Robots, the Military's Newest Forces - NYTimes.com - 0 views

FORT BENNING, Ga. - War would be a lot safer, the Army says, if only more of it were fought by robots. Smarter Than You Think Government Issue Articles in this series are examining the recent advances in artificial intelligence and robotics and their potential impact on society. And while smart machines are already very much a part of modern warfare, the Army and its contractors are eager to add more. New robots - none of them particularly human-looking - are being designed to handle a broader range of tasks, from picking off snipers to serving as indefatigable night sentries.

Simple Wikipedia - 0 views

"Simple English Wikipedia is a version of the Wikipedia encyclopedia, written in Simple English. Articles in the Simple English Wikipedia use fewer words and easier grammar than the English Wikipedia. The Simple English Wikipedia is also for people with different needs, such as students, children, adults with learning difficulties and people who are trying to learn English. Other people use the Simple English Wikipedia because the simple language helps them understand unfamiliar topics or complex ideas." I've found this quite useful for myself and my students. Some of regular Wikipedia's articles are simply too complicated - Simple Wikipedia has fewer articles, but those it has are generally a lot clearer.

The New Scientist's technology section has a lot of useful information, and a lot of it very easy to understand too. A useful source for articles for discussion, the technology section also breaks down into smaller topics like Computer Crime, Robotics, and Weapons. Some of the "Instant Expert" guides in here are well worth using in class, and some of the articles may also be suitable for Paper 2. (subscription required for some articles)

Smart Guns that Lock Out Criminals - 2 views

  •
An article about the use of biometrics to authenticate gun owners. Weapons come with fingerprint sensors built in and will fire only for the authorised owner. The article also covers some of the problems of biometrics - the system claims to be 95% accurate - which is still not enough for use by the military or police officers.

The science and technology of air traffic control - 0 views

  •
The typical image people have of air traffic control (ATC) is that of a group of people in an airport tower who coordinate aircraft activity by staring at radar screens that use points of light to represent aircraft. While not fundamentally incorrect, this isn't a fair representation of the extent of ATC operations. This article will flesh out that simplistic image and introduce you to the equipment, technologies, and procedures that go into keeping aircraft and air travelers safe in the air and on the ground. We'll look at the way air traffic control is organized, and explore the communication technologies that air traffic controllers use to keep in touch with air crew and ground personnel. We'll also look at the radar technologies used to keep track of aircraft, and we'll end with a brief look at some next-generation technologies.
