This article addresses many of the potential problems with the development of smart homes. Particularly, there is a mention of the differing (and therefore competing) protocols in use by different manufacturers. This means that many products may be incompatible, although it is possible that vendors will "provide point-to-point connections between individual devices".

Thanks for sharing this article. After read it I now am considering the time and efficiency that come with a cloud system. For instance, what if you want a smart home in the country? will you have to compromise due to the slowness of the internet? To add it also agrees with my idea that companies are competing too much and as so there is little to no way to use two different providers without problems.
