      ...so, it is not really "free"... you gotta have a top tier W7 edition... again this hits the budget-minded XP user hard.

      ...let me see if I have this right... the XP mode will run on hardware that W7 won't run on... then how the hell do you install W7 to get the XP mode?

      will work... provided you have a PC with the horsepower to run both W7 and XP mode... so will just leaving XP as your OS.

      ...but not every PC manufactured in the past decade will be able to run W7... so budget wise, I gotta buy W7 *and* a new PC to run my XP apps. I don't see a need to change (other than to build MSFT's coffers... and that is not one of my business objectives).

  • a Vista migration would have meant upgrading 60% of his hardware, something he was not prepared to do. With Windows 7 and its smaller footprint, the majority of his hardware is already compatible.

      maybe happy, but much poorer because of the need to update all their XP apps and retire all the older PCs that do not have the horsepower....

      ...W7 is not the solution for XP migration path... it is almost like MSFT is bifurcating back to the old w98 // NT days... Why can't MSFT extend XP rather than repackage Vista??

      ...this is beginning to sound like the Intel Itanium processor (remember the x86 virtual mode?)... only on the OS side. This repackage of Vista with is only compelling if there are critical appls that operate under the 'new & improved' platform... so far all I see is the "new"...

      Hoping is one thing... upgrading for today's SMB is entirely different. The risk, cost, disruption, aggravation of this upgrade is not justified by the benefits... I continue to experiment with the newer OSes, but all my professional production is done on XP... and I continue to tell my clients to wait for a *real* reason to wanna change... Change is painful!!
